Installs 52 Solar Lights ensuring lighting up of areas to ensure women safety

MUMBAI: Tata Power, India’s largest integrated power company, has always been committed towards the safety and security of its communities living in and around its areas of operation. In line with this commitment, Tata Power has installed solar lights in various locations of Chembur to light up the areas known to be unsafe for women. The installation of the solar lights was carried out to reduce the instances of crime against women and to provide security in public places.
Tata Power conducted a survey in the adjoining areas of Chembur which highlighted the need for well-lit areas as crimes against women were on the rise. Addressing this issue, Tata Power has installed 52 solar lights in two phases; 18 lights in the first phase and 34 more lights in the second phase. This initiative has received extensive support from various women self-help group members from Vashi Naka, Shahaji Nagar, and Vishnu Nagar of Chembur.
Speaking on this initiative, Ashok Sethi Executive Director, Tata Power, said, “We at Tata Power have always remained committed towards the safety and security of women in our areas of operation. The installation of the solar lights will certainly address the issue of women safety in public places and will enable them to be independent. We are thankful to the members of the self-help groups for identifying the issue and helping us facilitate a safer environment for women.”
In order to ensure sustainable operation of the lights, Tata Power team has specially trained the local women self-help group members and community members for panel cleaning and maintenance. This initiative will benefit close to 25, 000 women from the nearby communities. The engagement of local women and community self-help groups will serve to make this initiative sustainable. The cohesive approach of Tata Power along with the members of the communities and the local self-help groups will ensure a strong and sustainable relationship with its communities.
