The C20 serves as an autonomous platform that fosters policy discussions between civil society organizations and G20 governments.
CIVIL-20 (C20) is an official engagement group of the G20, representing the civil society organizations of the G20 member countries. The group was established in 2013 and seeks to provide a platform for civil society organizations to engage with G20 leaders on issues of global importance. The Civil 20 (C20) is a platform for engaging with civil society organizations (CSOs) from around the world, providing them with an opportunity to contribute their views and recommendations to the G20 leaders’ discussions. The C20 operates as an independent platform that facilitates policy dialogue between G20 governments and civil society organizations.
Associated Groups
The C20 is one of several engagement groups associated with the G20, which also includes the Business 20 (B20), the Labour 20 (L20), the Think 20 (T20), the Women 20 (W20), the Youth 20 (Y20), and the Science 20 (S20). Each of these groups provides an opportunity for various stakeholders to engage with G20 governments and contribute to the shaping of policies and decisions.
G-20 and CSOs
The C20 typically holds its summit and related events in the lead-up to the G20 leaders’ summit, providing an opportunity for (Civil Society Organizations) CSOs to discuss and develop policy recommendations on issues such as climate change, inequality, and human rights. The C20’s recommendations are then submitted to the G20 leaders for consideration.
India Chapter
C20 India 2023 is the Indian chapter of C20, which aims to engage civil society organizations from India and other countries in shaping policy recommendations for the G20. Establishment
The C20 was first established in 2013, and since then it has become an increasingly important platform for civil society organizations to engage with the G20. The C20 is organized by a steering committee, which is responsible for setting the agenda, selecting participants, and coordinating the group’s activities. The steering committee is made up of representatives from civil society organizations from G20 member countries, as well as representatives from international civil society organizations.
Focus areas
The C20 focuses on a range of issues, including climate change, human rights, gender equality, economic inequality, and sustainable development. The group’s recommendations often call for greater transparency, accountability, and participation in decision-making processes, as well as increased investment in public services and social protection programs. CSOs represent a wide range of issues, including the UN’s Agenda 2030 and the Sustainable Development Goals, and as such, they are one of the most powerful tools societies have to reach a vast spectrum of opinions, perspectives, and experiences. In advance of the G20 Summit, C20 will collaborate with hundreds of CSOs from around the world.
Challenges
One of the key challenges faced by the C20 is ensuring that its recommendations are taken seriously by G20 governments. While the C20 is intended to be an independent platform, it is ultimately up to the G20 leaders to decide whether to adopt the group’s recommendations. Despite this challenge, the C20 remains an important platform for civil society organizations to engage with the G20 and contribute to the shaping of global policy.
