The government’s initiatives to promote green ports, such as the Green Port Awards, the Green Port Policy, and the Sagarmala Programme, are helping to create a more sustainable maritime transportation system in the country.

In India, Green Ports refer to ports that prioritize environmental sustainability by implementing measures to decrease their carbon emissions and preserve the surrounding ecosystem. The Ministry of Ports, Shipping, and Waterways in India has put forth a Green Ports Policy to promote these efforts, which includes reducing emissions at major ports, promoting the use of renewable energy, optimizing water usage, improving solid waste management, and lowering carbon emissions.

The policy also outlines specific goals, such as increasing green cover, electrifying vehicles and port equipment, and establishing green ammonia bunkers and refueling facilities at major ports by 2035. This policy applies to both major and non-major ports across India.

India, with its vast coastline of over 7,500 km and numerous ports, has immense potential to become a leader in sustainable maritime transportation. Recognizing this potential, the government of India has been taking steps to promote the development of green ports in the country.

Green ports have the potential to reduce the environmental impact of port operations while creating employment opportunities and promoting economic growth.

A green port is a port that is designed, constructed, and operated in an environmentally sustainable manner. Such ports prioritize energy efficiency, use renewable energy sources, minimize waste generation and promote waste management, reduce air and water pollution, and aim to mitigate the impact of port operations on the environment.

In India, the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways has been working towards developing green ports across the country. The ministry has launched various initiatives, including the Green Port Awards, the Green Port Policy, and the Sagarmala Programme, to encourage the development of sustainable ports.

The Green Port Awards aim to recognize and reward Indian ports that have taken significant steps towards sustainable and eco-friendly operations. The awards are given in various categories, such as energy efficiency, waste management, green initiatives, and environment-friendly initiatives.

The draft Green Port Policy provides guidelines for the development of green ports in India. The policy mandates that all major ports in the country should adopt sustainable practices and promote the use of renewable energy sources. It also encourages the development of port infrastructure, such as berths, jetties, and storage facilities, that are designed to minimize the environmental impact of port operations.

The Sagarmala Programme, launched in 2015, is a flagship initiative of the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways. The programme aims to develop India’s ports and waterways for efficient transportation, promote sustainable development, and create job opportunities. Under the programme, the government has identified various projects that will promote the development of green ports in the country.

One such project is the development of a Green Energy Plant at the Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust (JNPT), near Mumbai. The plant will generate renewable energy from solar and wind sources and will help reduce the port’s dependence on non-renewable energy sources.

Another project is the development of a Green Port Policy Toolkit, which will provide guidelines and best practices for the development of green ports in India. The toolkit will cover various aspects of port operations, such as energy efficiency, waste management, and pollution control.

The government has also taken steps to promote sustainable transportation through the development of inland waterways. Inland waterways are an environmentally friendly mode of transportation and can help reduce road congestion and air pollution. The government has identified several inland waterway projects under the Sagarmala Programme, which will promote the use of waterways for transportation.
