Renew’s Commitment to Advancing Gender Parity in the Workplace and Society

By Rusen Kumar
NEW DELHI (India CSR): Gender equality is not just an ambition—it is a necessity, says Vaishali Nigam Sinha, Vice President-Northern Region, UN Global Compact Network India (UN GCNI) and Co-Founder & Chairperson, Sustainability, Renew. In an exclusive interview with India CSR, she shared her insights on gender parity, corporate responsibility, and the evolving role of businesses in bridging gender gaps.
“I don’t understand a world where there is no gender equality. It is essential for a normal, functioning society. If women, who multitask and contribute both at home and at work, are not treated equally, then the energy and enthusiasm in the system decline.”
Her words resonate with the broader conversation on workplace diversity, women’s empowerment, and the intersection of business and social responsibility. Sinha’s vision for gender equality extends beyond rhetoric—it is embedded in Renew’s corporate philosophy and CSR initiatives.
The Business Case for Gender Equality in Corporate Leadership
Sinha firmly believes that gender balance is a fundamental force for economic growth and corporate success. She highlighted the transformative impact of bringing men and women together in leadership roles.
“The impact of gender diversity is phenomenal. When men and women contribute together, the workplace becomes more innovative, productive, and dynamic.”
At Renew, gender equality is not just a social goal but a strategic business advantage. The company has taken measurable steps to integrate gender inclusivity into its corporate structure, from hiring policies to leadership development programs.
Renew’s Key Gender Parity Initiatives:
- 40% of Renew’s board comprises women leaders, exceeding industry standards.
- The company maintains a gender parity level above the sector’s average of 11%.
- Power of W Program: A structured mentorship and networking initiative to support women professionals.
- Refer Her Program: Encouraging referrals of female candidates to increase diversity in recruitment.
- Gender Pay Parity Audit: Ensuring equal pay for equal work, fostering fairness and transparency.
Despite these achievements, Sinha acknowledges that there is still more to be done. The company is working towards achieving 30% female representation in its workforce by 2030.
“We have set ambitious goals because gender parity is not just about meeting quotas—it’s about creating real opportunities for women to excel and lead.”
Empowering Women in Renewable Energy: A Sectoral Perspective
Renew, one of India’s leading renewable energy companies, is challenging long-held perceptions about women’s roles in the energy sector. The company actively promotes women’s participation in traditionally male-dominated fields such as solar energy, engineering, and climate action.
“There is a myth that clean energy jobs are not suitable for women. This is completely untrue. Renewable energy offers multiple opportunities for women across finance, R&D, technology, social responsibility, and digital transformation.”
One of the flagship initiatives Renew has launched is the Surya Program, which focuses on training women as solar technicians. This program has engaged three generations of women within families—mothers, daughters, and granddaughters—to ensure sustained participation in the energy sector.
Surya Program: Key Achievements
- Reskilling women from salt pan industries to become solar technicians.
- Improving women’s earnings by 7-8 times compared to previous occupations.
- Placing trained women in Renew and other renewable energy firms, ensuring broad-based industry engagement.
Sinha stressed that women’s participation in renewable energy is essential for climate resilience, as climate change disproportionately affects women.
“Climate change impacts women the most. They are the first responders to extreme weather events. Engaging women in climate solutions is not just beneficial—it is essential for sustainability.”
The Role of CSR in Gender Equality and Women’s Empowerment
Beyond internal corporate policies, Renew is investing in CSR programs that uplift women in rural and urban communities. The company operates across 10 states, tailoring its initiatives to address local challenges and opportunities for women’s leadership.
“In every region we operate, we focus on engaging women—whether through self-help groups, entrepreneurship training, or financial support to start businesses.”
Sinha emphasized the importance of aligning CSR with gender-focused goals, particularly in areas such as:
- Financial inclusion and entrepreneurship
- Skill development and workforce integration
- Climate resilience and women’s participation in clean energy
“Women must be at the forefront of economic and social development. It is not about charity—it is about creating sustainable opportunities where women can thrive.”
Renew’s gender-inclusive CSR strategy aligns with global frameworks, such as the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 5 (Gender Equality) and SDG 13 (Climate Action).
Women’s Safety and Workplace Infrastructure: A Critical Concern
One of the most pressing barriers to gender parity, Sinha pointed out, is women’s safety and infrastructure in workplaces.
“Why do women feel unsafe? It’s not their fault. It is a societal issue that businesses must address. Companies must invest in hostels, safe transport, and work environments that make it easier for women to join and remain in the workforce.”
Renew is actively working on bridging this infrastructure gap by:
- Ensuring safe workspaces and accommodation facilities for women employees.
- Investing in programs that support women’s access to career opportunities in remote locations.
- Partnering with multilateral financial institutions to prioritize gender parity in funding requirements.
“Financial institutions now assess gender parity on sites before granting loans. This is a business reality, not just a social expectation.”
This approach reinforces the idea that gender equity is not just an ethical obligation but a sound business strategy.
The Road Ahead: A Call for a Women-Led CSR Leadership Summit
During the interview, Sinha was enthusiastic about the idea of a dedicated CSR Leadership Summit focusing on women empowerment. The summit would bring together women CSR leaders to discuss gender equality, corporate responsibility, and inclusive development.
“This is a much-needed discussion. I am happy to explore this idea further with my team. Women’s voices in CSR must be amplified, and this platform could be a game-changer.”
She emphasized that corporate responsibility should not be limited to traditional CSR spending—it should be about structural changes within businesses that promote gender parity.
“We cannot wait for external forces to push us toward gender equality. As business leaders, we must take the initiative ourselves.”
Gender Parity as a Shared Responsibility
Vaishali Nigam Sinha’s perspective on gender equality is clear and actionable: it is not just a women’s issue—it is a collective imperative.
“A gender-equal world is a more prosperous world. We must commit to tangible actions—whether through corporate policies, CSR, or government collaboration—to make this vision a reality.”
Renew’s gender-inclusive approach offers a blueprint for other companies, demonstrating that gender equality and business success go hand in hand.
With targets such as 30% female workforce representation by 2030, initiatives like Power of W and Surya, and advocacy for inclusive workplace policies, Renew is setting a benchmark for corporate India.
As gender equality continues to be a global priority, leaders like Vaishali Nigam Sinha are driving the conversation forward—ensuring that businesses not only talk about change but actively implement it.
