The Indian Ocean is home to a vast array of marine life and natural resources, making it a key contributor to the country’s blue economy. The blue economy refers to the sustainable use of ocean resources for economic growth, improved livelihoods, and ocean conservation.
In an effort to develop the potential of the Indian Ocean, the Ministry of Earth Sciences has launched the Deep Ocean Mission (DOM), a multi-ministerial, multi-disciplinary programme focused on the development of deep-sea technology. The DOM includes the development of a manned submersible capable of diving to depths of up to 6,000 meters, as well as technologies for deep-sea mining, exploration of deep-sea mineral resources, and marine biodiversity.
The DOM also aims to acquire a research vessel for ocean exploration, develop ocean climate change advisory services, and build capacity in marine biology. Through these initiatives, the DOM hopes to unlock the potential of the blue economy of the Indian Ocean, contributing to economic growth and improved livelihoods.
In addition to the DOM, the Inland Waterways Authority has awarded a project to develop an energy-efficient river survey drifter drone to the Indian Maritime University (IMU) at a cost of Rs. 21.94 lakhs. To date, IMU has received Rs. 14.47 lakhs for the project. These initiatives highlight the government’s commitment to developing the blue economy of the Indian Ocean and leveraging its vast resources for the benefit of the country.
