NEW DELHI (India CSR): Every child should have the chance to succeed, but this can be difficult for many families dealing with the intricacies of disability. An estimated 7.8 million youngsters in India are thought to have disabilities, battling issues ranging from developmental abnormalities to physical impairments. Comprehensive care is difficult to get for these families due to a lack of proper medical infrastructure, funding, and public awareness. Through its focused programs, The Hans Foundation (THF) has emerged as a ray of hope, providing families and children with disabilities with a variety of forms of assistance. Through collaboration with establishments such as AIIMS Delhi and Satya Special School, THF has created initiatives that turn obstacles into turning points in development.

Lakshitha’s Journey: Overcoming Developmental Delays

Lakshitha, a young girl from Andhra Pradesh, faced severe developmental delays, including the inability to use her left side. Financial constraints and a lack of nearby medical facilities forced her parents to move to Puducherry, where they discovered the Udavi Child Development Center, supported by THF in collaboration with Satya Special School. Through physiotherapy and structured therapy sessions, Lakshitha’s world changed. Within 40 sessions, she learned to sit, crawl, and interact with peers. Her mother, once burdened with worry, now celebrates these milestones with pride.

Helen Joshna: From Rejection to Acceptance

Three-and-a-half-year-old Helen Joshna faced speech delays, echolalia, and behavioral issues that led to social stigmas and school rejection. Her father’s modest income from his furniture business limited access to extensive treatment. The Udavi Center’s intervention included speech and behavioral therapies that brought quick changes: Helen began speaking in meaningful sentences, identifying objects, and socializing. The progress led to her admission to a regular school, a step once deemed impossible. Monthly follow-ups keep Helen on track as she adapts to new environments, bringing joy and relief to her parents.

Varshitha’s Fight Against Cerebral Palsy

Born without complications, baby Varshitha’s parents could not have anticipated her later diagnosis of diplegia cerebral palsy. Her father, a welder, faced immense challenges trying to afford therapy on an annual income of ₹1.5 lakhs. Varshitha’s inability to sit or stand added to the family’s despair until they discovered the Udavi Center.

Under THF’s guidance, Varshitha began receiving intensive occupational and physiotherapy. Over 35 sessions, she progressed to standing and walking with support, and even started to socialize and speak. The once-distant goal of schooling is now within reach, filling her mother with optimism for the future.

The Broader Challenge: A Call to Action

The stories of Lakshitha, Helen, and Varshitha are a testament to the life-changing role of THF’s initiatives. However, their cases represent only a small portion of the challenges faced by millions of Indian families. Without adequate support, many children with disabilities risk being sidelined, denied the opportunity to live fulfilling lives.

THF’s Lifelines: Transforming Lives Through Support

THF’s programs—blending medical, therapeutic, and parental guidance—are not just interventions but lifelines that turn despair into hope. With continuous efforts and community engagement, these initiatives emphasize the importance of supporting the underprivileged, ensuring that no family faces such hardships alone. By empowering children and their families, THF affirms that with the right resources and commitment, every child has a chance to thrive and contribute meaningfully to society.
