Teck aims to be nature positive by 2030, restoring three hectares of land for each hectare disrupted by mining.
Canada based Teck Resources Limited is a leading mining company that values sustainability and sees it as integral to its overall business performance. The company’s commitment to sustainability is evidenced by its disclosure of annual performance and progress on sustainability goals, building trust with local communities, Indigenous Peoples, governments and investors.
In February 2022, Teck announced an expanded net-zero climate strategy, which includes achieving net-zero Scope 2 emissions by 2025, ambition to achieve net-zero Scope 3 emissions by 2050, support for partners in advancing greenhouse gas reduction technologies, and partnering with customers and transportation providers to establish low-carbon supply chain corridors.
In 2022, Teck made meaningful strides toward these goals, including partnering with Caterpillar, announcing a Carbon Capture Utilization and Storage (CCUS) plant pilot at its Trail Operations, and securing 100% renewable power for its Quebrada Blanca 2 copper project, starting in 2025.
Teck is also committed to becoming nature positive by 2030, which includes conserving or rehabilitating at least three hectares of land for every hectare disturbed by its mining activities. Teck is implementing nature positive decision-making, working toward rehabilitation excellence, and establishing further conservation, protection and restoration partnerships.
Teck’s immediate action toward this goal includes donating $2 million to the Nature Conservancy of Canada (NCC) to purchase and manage the Next Creek Watershed in British Columbia, donating the Wycliffe Wildlife Corridor to NCC, establishing a partnership with the Ollagüe Quechua community to conserve the Alconcha Salt Flat, allocating $10 million to create an Indigenous Stewardship Fund, and donating $12 million to NCC to support future high-priority conservation projects.
In addition, Teck has continued to advance its entire sustainability strategy, reducing its High-Potential Incident Frequency, sourcing 94% of its electricity from renewable, zero-carbon power sources, hiring more women, investing in local communities, and advancing its Elk Valley Water Quality plan. Teck recognizes that its ability to continue operating and generating value depends on strong sustainability performance and staying resilient through commodity cycles.
Teck acknowledges that achieving its sustainability goals cannot be accomplished in isolation. The company is dedicated to working together with its stakeholders and partners to promote progress towards a sustainable future. For instance, Teck has collaborated with organizations like the World Wildlife Fund to create shared value approaches to water stewardship, as well as with governments and industry peers to develop a clean technology innovation program aimed at supporting the transition to a low-carbon economy.
Furthermore, Teck’s commitment to sustainability also extends to its supply chain. The company collaborates with its suppliers to encourage responsible sourcing of materials and support their endeavors to reduce their environmental impact. Teck’s Supplier Code of Conduct outlines its expectations for suppliers, including compliance with environmental regulations, respect for human rights, and transparency.
Teck views sustainability as an essential value and an integral component of its business strategy. By incorporating sustainability into its business model, Teck is not only managing risks but also creating fresh opportunities for growth and innovation. Teck’s dedication to sustainability is evident in its ambitious goals to become net-zero and nature-positive, its efforts to establish trust with stakeholders, and its partnership with collaborators to promote progress towards a sustainable future.
