Understanding the CSR Obligation and Spending

For the financial year 2024-25, Tata Consumer Products Limited’s CSR obligation, calculated as two percent of the company’s average net profit as per Section 135(5) of the Companies Act, 2013, amounted to Rs 24.17 Crores. After accounting for amounts available for set-off from preceding financial years (Rs 26 Lakhs), the total CSR obligation for FY 2024-25 stood at Rs 23.91 Crores. In fulfilling this obligation, TCPL reported a total amount spent on CSR activities for the financial year of Rs 21.67 Crores. The difference between the obligation and the amount spent (Rs 2.24 Crores) related to unspent CSR expenses for ongoing projects at the end of the fiscal year, which was transferred to a designated special account within 30 days, in compliance with statutory provisions.

Pillars of ‘For Better Living’

TCPL’s CSR policy is deeply anchored in its ‘For Better Living’ strategy, aiming to create meaningful and lasting impact through a commitment to Sustainability and Corporate Social Responsibility. The initiatives are guided by a vision of fostering sustainable livelihoods and are concentrated across several key thematic areas, including Nutrition, Affordable Health Care, WaSH (Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene), Education and Skilling, Rural Development, and Empowerment of Differently Abled individuals. These efforts are designed to align with the Tata Group’s broader purpose of enhancing the quality of life in the communities it serves and contribute directly to various Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Investing in Key Projects Across India

The FY 2024-25 CSR spending included significant investments in specific projects across different states. A substantial Rs 17.94 Crores was spent on ongoing projects. Notable allocations include Rs 5.00 Crores towards promoting preventive healthcare in Assam, focusing on initiatives implemented through partners like the APPL Foundation. Water and sanitation projects, particularly the Jalodari Project aimed at creating sustainable water sources and improving hygiene, received considerable funding, with Rs 1.51 Crores allocated in Assam and Rs 35 Lakhs in Himachal Pradesh. These projects address critical needs for safe drinking water, as highlighted by initiatives like the one at Diffloo Tea Estate in Assam, where a Tech Jal filtration unit was installed to purify river water for residents.

Rural development initiatives also saw significant investment, with Rs 3.50 Crores spent through the Tata Chemicals Society for Rural Development (TCSRD) in the Mithapur region of Gujarat. These projects encompass water conservation, livestock development, healthcare, and skill development, demonstrating a holistic approach to community upliftment. Support for millet farmers in the Mysuru district of Karnataka, aimed at promoting sustainable millet-based agricultural practices, received Rs 15 Lakhs, in partnership with Swami Vivekananda Youth Movement (SVYM). This project provides farmers with education and resources to adopt eco-friendly techniques and capitalize on the nutritional value of millets. Initiatives for the empowerment of differently abled individuals, such as those implemented through Srishti in Munnar, Kerala, received Rs 68 Lakhs.

Governance and Accountability

TCPL maintains a robust governance framework for its CSR activities, led by the Corporate Social Responsibility & Sustainability Committee (CSR&S Committee) of the Board. This committee is responsible for formulating and recommending the CSR policy, identifying projects, approving expenditures, and monitoring implementation. The company’s CSR activities are conducted in accordance with Section 135 of the Companies Act, 2013. To ensure transparency and measure the effectiveness of its interventions, TCPL undertakes impact assessments of its CSR projects through independent agencies. For FY 2023-24, SoulAce Consulting Private Limited conducted the impact assessment of 11 projects, reporting a reach of over 122,000 beneficiaries and documenting positive outcomes such as increased household incomes and reduced waterborne diseases in specific project areas.

Beyond Spending: Broader Impact and Volunteering

While financial investment is crucial, TCPL’s commitment extends to fostering a culture of social responsibility among its employees. In FY 2024-25, employees demonstrated remarkable dedication by contributing 88,580 volunteering hours, translating to an impressive average of 8.4 hours per employee. This significant contribution underscores the integral role employees play in driving the company’s community-focused initiatives. TCPL’s CSR initiatives, including those focused on healthcare and water conservation, contribute to the Tata Group’s broader Project Aalingana, which seeks to align the group among global sustainability leaders through pillars like driving Net Zero, pioneering Circular Economies, and preserving Nature & Biodiversity.

The company’s long-term aspiration is to reach 2 million community members by FY 2030 through its CSR efforts. As of March 2024, they had already positively impacted 1.5 million individuals, demonstrating steady progress towards this ambitious goal. Through strategic partnerships with governments and non-governmental organisations, TCPL aims for sustainable and inclusive development, focusing on those most in need.
