CHENNAI (India CSR): In a heartening display of corporate compassion, GRT Jewellers has stepped up to combat one of India’s most pressing health challenges by donating Rs 1 crore to the Tamilnad Kidney Research (TANKER) Foundation. This significant Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) contribution, presented during a special ceremony in Chennai, underscores the growing role of private sector involvement in bridging gaps in affordable healthcare. As kidney disorders continue to escalate nationwide, such initiatives are vital in providing relief to vulnerable communities struggling with high treatment costs.
The Landmark Donation Event
The donation was formally handed over on August 9 at the Grand Chennai venue, led by G. Rajendran, Chairman of GRT Hotels, alongside managing directors G.R. Ananthapadmanabhan, G.R. Radhakrishnan, and Jayashree Rajesh. This Rs 1 crore grant forms part of GRT Jewellers’ broader CSR allocation of Rs 3.67 crore distributed among 11 non-governmental organizations this year. The funds are earmarked specifically for subsidizing dialysis sessions, transplantation support, and essential medications for patients who otherwise couldn’t afford them. Latha A. Kumaraswami, Managing Trustee of TANKER, expressed profound gratitude, emphasizing how this support will extend critical care to more individuals and potentially save countless lives amid economic hardships.
TANKER Foundation’s Enduring Legacy in Kidney Care
Founded in 1993, TANKER Foundation has evolved into a beacon of hope for underprivileged kidney patients across Tamil Nadu. Operating 14 dialysis centers statewide, the organization has delivered over 779,000 subsidized dialysis sessions to more than 3,000 patients as of May 2025. Beyond dialysis, it offers financial aid totaling Rs 4.62 crore for transplants, diagnostics, and drugs, while pioneering efforts like India’s first HIV-specific dialysis unit since 2009 highlight its innovative approach. Additionally, TANKER runs extensive awareness campaigns, screening nearly 48,400 people and educating over 1,100 communities to promote early detection and prevention. These programs not only treat but also empower, fostering long-term health resilience in rural and urban areas alike.

Escalating Kidney Disease Burden in India
Kidney ailments represent a silent epidemic in India, with chronic kidney disease (CKD) now affecting an estimated 128 million people, making the country home to about 33% of global cases. Recent data from 2025 shows a alarming 16.38% surge in prevalence, driven by factors like diabetes, hypertension, and lifestyle changes. Men face a higher risk at 14.8%, compared to 13.51% for women, with southern regions reporting rates around 14.78%. Annually, over 250,000 lives are lost to kidney failure, ranking it as the third leading cause of death. Rural areas bear the brunt due to limited access to specialists—India has only about 2,600 nephrologists for 140 million CKD patients—exacerbating the crisis. Projections indicate the burden could widen, with future prevalence potentially ranging from 2.64% to 30.17% if unchecked.
GRT Jewellers’ Broader CSR Commitment
GRT Jewellers, a renowned name in India’s jewelry sector since 1964, has consistently integrated social responsibility into its operations. Beyond this health-focused donation, the company has disbursed Rs 1.37 crore in scholarships to 264 students from low-income families and contributed ₹50 lakh to disaster relief in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana. Their CSR policy emphasizes education, healthcare, and community upliftment, with past efforts including ₹1 crore to cancer research and COVID-19 relief funds. In 2025 alone, GRT supported 245 underprivileged students through scholarships, reflecting a holistic approach to societal development. This latest contribution to TANKER aligns with their mission to foster inclusive growth, demonstrating how businesses can drive meaningful change.
