In the recent months, the need to address issue of proper sanitation has been understood not only by political leaders, Govt. Institutions, societies but also by the Corporate sector and the organizations like INDIACSR that are working tirelessly in the efforts to develop healthier societies and inclusive growth. The whole country is associating with the ‘Swatch Bharat Mission’ launched by the new BJP Government led by Honorable Prime Minister of India- Shri Narendra Modi.

About the Enviro Loo

Inviro Loo-1Enviro Loo was founded in 1993, with the invention of a dry sanitation system that is sustainable and cost effective. Enviro Loo is a commercial organisation that not only offers a waterless sanitation solution but always takes into account infrastructure restrictions, cost constraints and the longevity of any sanitation facility. Enviro Loo has a vested interest in tackling the worldwide sanitation crisis head on and with vigour and commitment. Our interest goes beyond the commercial and extends directly to the human, ensuring every person has access to sustainable sanitation facilities.

“Enviro Loo is a change the planet organisation, and we believe the Enviro loo makes a significant impact and contribution to the education and health system, the environment and the economic prosperity of a country. Our commitment is driven by our knowledge that providing sanitation facilities is more than just providing a toilet; an Enviro Loo provides dignity, safety and privacy.”, Enviro Loo said.

The Enviro Loo utilises natural processes and only requires the wind and the sun to operate. An evaporation and dehydration system, the Enviro Loo transforms human solid waste into a safe, neutral material without the use of water, chemicals or electricity. The Enviro Loo is easy to install and maintain and is an environmentally sound, zero discharge system. It is a sealed system that cannot leak and neither can storm or flood water penetrate the container if correctly installed.

The sealed unit captures and treats the waste, and ensures no contamination to  the immediate or surrounding environment making the Enviro Loo installation capable of preserving world heritage sites, encouraging access to areas of natural beauty and ensuring that tourism is an economic generator. Similarly due to the sealed unit, the Enviro Loo works particularly well in areas with high water tables.

It can be installed as a household unit for usage of 1-10 users per day; for communal use accommodating from 10 – 20 users per day, and industrial use of more than 40 users per day. We also have a urinal option for men’s bathroom facilities.

The solution is being installed in both developed and developing worlds, in urban and rural areas, in Christian, Muslim and Jewish communities.   Enviro Loo requires no power, no internal moving parts, no external connections, and no water use or additives.

The system comes with a 2 year manufacturers guarantee, with an expected lifespan of 50 years or more.  The Enviro Loo is a safe, sustainable, cost-effective and environmentally solution that is climate, geographic, topographic and cultural immune.

Water is a precious resource getting scarcer every day. Infrastructure for waste disposal is not always present in many remote but inhabited locations and the economic standing of many communities and institutions cannot support excessive ongoing maintenance costs.

Enviro has addressed the factors that inhibit the installation of safe, sustainable sanitation and has developed a toilet solution that addresses these hurdles and is more cost effective over its lifetime when compared to other systems.   The sanitation crisis is worse in developing countries but shouldn’t equate to sub-standard solutions with a disregard for human dignity.

Innovation and technology are central to modern sanitation solutions that are affordable, safe, and sustainable. At Enviro Loo we are committed to continually developing innovative solutions that provide social and environmental benefits for individuals and communities.

he Enviro Loo was designed and developed in 1993 by renowned South African scientist Dr Brian La Trobe.  A scientist, inventor and technologist, Dr La Trobe knew that a convenient and economical solution to the growing sanitation crisis in South Africa, and the increasingly evident water crisis that would beset the world within the very near future was urgently required.  He also knew that technology and innovation would hold the answer to a new invention.

Dr La Trobe worked as a city councillor and was acutely aware of the environmental detriment the traditional sanitation systems were having on the planet. He then foresaw the need to develop a solution that would conserve precious water resources, but also critical to the design and development was that the system was safe, hygienic and affordable. He knew that if he could invent such a solution that huge strides could be made with regards to health, educational attainment, environment conservation, economic prosperity and most importantly providing human dignity to people everywhere. It was against this background and commitment that the Enviro Loo was born.

He used bacterial and biological technology plus expertise gained in research and development of waste management to develop the Enviro Loo Dry Sanitation system.

He then installed prototypes within communities to gage acceptance. Widespread experience with the system in South Africa and other countries throughout the world has demonstrated that the Enviro Loo is a cost-effective, respectable, hygienic, and environmentally friendly sanitation system that satisfies the dignity and privacy of all users.

Water scarcity, increasing urbanization, a growing population and the resultant increased demands for food are global issues with no country immune from them; and unless sustainable sanitation solutions such as the Enviro Loo are implemented the sustainability of communities and countries is precarious.

To date, there are more than 100 000 Enviro Loos successfully installed in 52 countries around the world. It is already installed in many developed (Australia, France, USA, Canada, Germany, Greece) and developing countries (India, Nigeria, Ghana, Kenya, South Africa).

Over $540 million economic benefits have been realised from Enviro Loo installations. Enviro Loo installations have helped enable over 2 million people, directly contributing to the socio economic development of their communities.

As of 2014, approximately 240 million litres of water per year is being saved by communities and institutions that use the Enviro Loo. Annual water charges of $26 million are currently being saved by communities and institutions using the Enviro Loo.

The Enviro Loo enables governments and agencies to address a number of areas that affect socio-economic development; namely: mortality rates, gender equality, universal education, poverty reduction and health.

The operational costs of the Enviro Loo system are minimal as wind and sun are used for energy and no water is required – with water costs at a premium and also a scarcity, this is a huge cost saving over traditional systems.

The Enviro Loo system delivers both social and economic returns as the system is 100% hygienic; eliminating potential for disease and illness thereby reducing work absenteeism through ill health, and increasing productivity. It also ensures increased school attendance and educational achievements that will provide opportunities later in life.  The economic impact of poor or zero safe sanitation is catastrophic but preventable.

Water scarcity and land pollution are a growing burden on society. The current sanitation crisis has a profoundly negative impact on the environment. Improving sanitation, improves the environment by safely disposing human waste and creates healthier living conditions for plants, animals, and human beings.
