Seasoned Leader with Over Three Decades of Expertise Takes Helm to Advance Key Hydroelectric Projects

NEW DELHI (India CSR): In a significant leadership transition, Sanjay Kumar Singh has been appointed as the interim Chairman and Managing Director (CMD) of NHPC Limited, India’s leading hydropower company, effective September 1, 2025. With over 33 years of experience in the power and infrastructure sectors, Singh steps into this pivotal role following the superannuation of Rajendra Prasad Goyal. His appointment marks a critical juncture for NHPC as it advances major hydroelectric projects and expands its renewable energy portfolio. This article explores Singh’s extensive background, his interim role, and the strategic direction he is expected to steer for NHPC.

A Proven Leader in Hydropower

Sanjay Kumar Singh brings a wealth of expertise to his interim CMD role, having served as NHPC’s Director (Projects) since July 24, 2024. A civil engineering graduate, Singh has spent over three decades managing complex power projects across India and Bhutan. Prior to joining NHPC, he held the position of Chief General Manager at SJVN Limited, where he spearheaded critical components of major hydroelectric projects, including the Nathpa Jhakri (1500 MW) and Tala Hydroelectric Projects. His experience spans project construction, contract management, and survey and investigation, making him a seasoned leader for NHPC’s ambitious goals.

Driving Key Hydroelectric Projects

During his tenure as Director (Projects), Singh has been instrumental in advancing NHPC’s flagship initiatives. Notably, he oversaw the successful commissioning of the 800 MW Parbati-II Hydroelectric Project in Himachal Pradesh, known for its challenging 31.5 km Head Race Tunnel. Additionally, he has driven significant progress on the 2000 MW Subansiri Lower Hydroelectric Project in Arunachal Pradesh, which is nearing completion. These achievements underscore Singh’s ability to manage large-scale projects in challenging terrains, positioning him to lead NHPC’s ongoing and future endeavors effectively.

Interim Leadership and Strategic Roles

Singh’s interim CMD appointment, approved by the Ministry of Power, will last for one month or until a permanent CMD is named. Beyond this role, Singh chairs the boards of NHPC Renewable Energy Limited and Jalpower Corporation Limited, both wholly-owned subsidiaries, and serves as a nominee director for joint ventures like Ratle Hydroelectric Power Corporation Limited and Chenab Valley Power Projects Limited. His multifaceted leadership roles highlight his strategic importance to NHPC’s growth in both hydropower and renewable energy sectors.

A Vision for NHPC’s Future

As interim CMD, Singh is expected to maintain NHPC’s momentum in delivering sustainable energy solutions. With 15 projects under construction, totaling 10,449 MW, including the Dibang Multipurpose Project (2880 MW) and solar projects in Gujarat and Rajasthan, NHPC is poised for significant growth. Singh’s expertise in project execution and planning will be critical as the company navigates regulatory approvals and expands its clean energy footprint, aligning with India’s renewable energy goals.
