Revolutionizing Water Accessibility: How the S M Sehgal Foundation’s Water ATMs Provide Safe Drinking Water to Villagers in Maharashtra
Water ATMs: Solving the Drinking Water Crisis
Residents of the Sillod and Phulmbari blocks in Aurangabad, Maharashtra, are heaving a sigh of relief with the advent of water ATMs. These ATMs, operational in five villages, have been designed to provide safe drinking water around the clock, addressing the acute shortage of potable water. At a reasonable cost of Rs 5 for 20 liters, the ATM system is an economical solution that also promotes the reuse of wastewater. A dedicated water management committee oversees the operation and management of this system, directly benefiting an approximate population of 5,000.
A Vision for Prosperous Rural India
The S M Sehgal Foundation was established in 1999 by Suri Sehgal and his wife, Edda Sehgal. The Foundation’s goal was to empower every individual across rural India to lead a secure, dignified, and prosperous life. This principle of self-reliance within the communities is at the heart of all the foundation’s rural development initiatives.
The Catalyst for Sustainable Development
The S M Sehgal Foundation takes pride in contributing to sustainable development and effecting positive social change in rural communities. Partnering with communities, it focuses on water security, food security, local participation, and addressing information asymmetry to help India realize its sustainable development goals. The Foundation’s transparent and participatory approach has consistently demonstrated success in engaging with communities on rural development solutions for a lasting impact.
Empowerment and Lasting Change
The community-led approach by the S M Sehgal Foundation ensures sustainability and a lasting impact. With a heightened awareness and the formation of village-based institutions, citizens are driving social change at the grassroots level. Active village development committees continue to uphold the physical and social capital in the villages long after the completion of the foundation’s projects and training programs. Indeed, empowerment is a potent catalyst for change!
