INDIA CSR NEWS ANALYSIS

CSR Spending Continues Upward Trend

CSR spending by POWERGRID has remained consistently high over the past few years. According to the annual report, Powergrid has maintained a strong focus on community development as part of its sustainability approach.

Powergrid’s financial strength supports this investment. The report highlights that POWERGRID recorded total income of Rs 47,459.38 crore in FY2024–25, with a net worth of about Rs 92,663 crore.

With rising profits and expanding operations, Powergrid has continued to allocate substantial funds for social projects in accordance with the Companies Act, 2013, which requires companies to spend at least two percent of their average net profits on CSR activities.

The annual report notes that POWERGRID not only met this requirement but exceeded its CSR obligation during the year.

Healthcare Infrastructure Remains a Key Focus

Healthcare emerged as one of the most important areas of CSR investment for POWERGRID in 2025. Several projects focused on improving medical infrastructure and providing support to patients and their families.

One of the Powergrid’s major initiatives is the construction of “Vishram Sadans,” rest houses that provide affordable accommodation for patients and their attendants near major hospitals.

According to the annual report, a new Vishram Sadan was inaugurated at Rajendra Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS), Ranchi during the year. Another Vishram Sadan project was sanctioned at AIIMS, Gorakhpur.

The report highlights that eight Vishram Sadans are already operational across India, while six additional facilities are currently under construction, including a major project at AIIMS, Raipur.

These facilities are intended to help families who travel long distances for treatment and often struggle to find affordable accommodation near hospitals.

Another important healthcare project implemented during the year was the Tele-ICU facility at Sanjay Gandhi Postgraduate Institute of Medical Sciences (SGPGIMS), Lucknow. The project, supported with Rs 11.71 crore, enables remote monitoring of critically ill patients through a hub-and-spoke digital healthcare system.

The annual report states that the system connects major hospitals with medical colleges across Uttar Pradesh, allowing specialists to provide guidance to doctors treating patients in remote areas.

Other healthcare initiatives included the installation of a 128-slice CT scan machine at the Community Health Centre in Sankoo, Kargil, and support for advanced diagnostic equipment at Tata Memorial Hospital in Mumbai.

These projects aim to strengthen public healthcare services and expand access to advanced medical technology.

Education Projects Reach Thousands of Students

Education and learning support also formed a major component of POWERGRID’s CSR programs in FY2024–25. According to the annual report, Powergrid invested in improving school infrastructure, digital learning and higher education facilities.

One of the notable initiatives took place in Nashik, where POWERGRID distributed tablets with preloaded educational content to 519 schools. The program benefited over 67,000 students, many of them from Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe communities.

The tablets allow students in rural schools to access digital learning resources even in areas with limited internet connectivity.

In Varanasi, Powergrid supported government schools by providing 5,000 benches and 200 learning kits for Anganwadi centres. These kits are intended to improve early childhood education and create a better learning environment.

The annual report also highlights support for higher education institutions. POWERGRID funded a campus-wide Wi-Fi network at the National Institute of Technology (NIT), Jamshedpur with an investment of Rs 4.52 crore.

Additionally, Powergrid supported the construction of a 150-bed hostel at C.M. Science College in Darbhanga, Bihar, which will help accommodate students from rural areas pursuing higher studies.

These initiatives aim to strengthen educational infrastructure and improve access to learning opportunities.

Skill Development and Youth Training

Apart from formal education, POWERGRID also focused on improving employment opportunities through skill development programs.

The annual report notes that Powergrid launched training programs for 2,500 unemployed youth in states including Bihar, West Bengal, Rajasthan and Chhattisgarh.

The program, supported with an investment of Rs 32.70 crore, focuses on technical skills related to power transmission line construction and maintenance.

These skills are expected to help young people secure jobs in the energy sector and related industries.

POWERGRID has also committed to participating in the Prime Minister’s Internship Scheme, under which 4,004 interns will receive training across the company’s facilities.

According to the report, the internship program will provide practical exposure to students and young professionals interested in the power sector.

Rural Development Projects Expand Community Infrastructure

Rural development is another major area of CSR investment for Powergrid. Many projects focus on improving local infrastructure and supporting community livelihoods.

One of the most ambitious projects supported by POWERGRID is the development of Shri Badrinath Dham in Uttarakhand as a “Spiritual Smart Hill Town.”

According to the annual report, Powergrid has committed Rs 42.98 crore for the project. The redevelopment plan covers 85 hectares and aims to improve infrastructure and visitor facilities in the pilgrimage town.

The report notes that the project is expected to benefit the 1.56 million tourists who visit the shrine annually.

POWERGRID has also partnered with the International Crops Research Institute for the Semi-Arid Tropics (ICRISAT) to introduce smart agriculture practices in tribal areas.

The program focuses on watershed management, soil improvement and crop diversification to improve farm productivity and increase farmers’ income.

Other rural development initiatives include the development of 11 villages in Bhojpur district, Bihar, and the renovation of a Sanskritik Bhawan cultural centre in Ara.

These projects aim to improve social infrastructure and community facilities in rural areas.

Environmental Sustainability and Renewable Initiatives

Environmental protection also remains an important part of POWERGRID’s CSR activities.

According to the annual report, Powergrid installed 2,713 solar street lights in Uttar Pradesh and Odisha, with a total investment of Rs 6.46 crore.

These solar lights help improve safety in rural areas while reducing dependence on conventional electricity.

Afforestation programs were also carried out during the year. The report highlights that POWERGRID planted over 1.35 lakh trees under the campaign “Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam.”

Water conservation projects were implemented in several regions as well. These included pond rejuvenation in Saharanpur, installation of hand pumps, and construction of micro water filtration plants in Andhra Pradesh.

The annual report states that these water projects helped provide safe drinking water to more than 68,000 villagers.

Governance and Monitoring of CSR Programs

POWERGRID follows a structured governance framework to manage its CSR activities.

According to the annual report, Powergrid’s CSR Committee met 10 times during FY2024–25 to review projects and monitor implementation.

Before launching any project, Powergrid conducts Need Analysis Studies in consultation with local communities. After completion, independent impact assessments are carried out to evaluate the results.

The report highlights that the CSR initiatives are aligned with national development priorities as well as the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

These include goals related to healthcare, education, clean water and sustainable communities.

Continuing Social Investment

POWERGRID’s CSR spending in 2025 reflects a continued focus on social development across multiple sectors.

By spending more than Rs 360 crore on CSR initiatives, Powergrid has expanded its efforts in healthcare, education, skill development, rural development and environmental protection.

According to the annual report, these initiatives aim to create lasting social impact while supporting communities connected to Powergrid’s nationwide transmission network.

As India continues to expand its energy infrastructure, the report highlights that social investment will remain an important part of Powergrid’s long-term strategy.
