Strategic Acquisition and Leadership Reshuffle Signal Ambitious Growth for AI Giant
OpenAI, the powerhouse behind ChatGPT, is making bold moves to strengthen its applications division with the appointment of Puducherry-born engineer Vijaye Raji as its new Chief Technology Officer (CTO) of Applications. Announced on September 2, 2025, this leadership change coincides with OpenAI’s $1.1 billion acquisition of Statsig, a Seattle-based product analytics firm founded by Raji. As the company aims to scale its AI-driven products to millions globally, this strategic overhaul underscores OpenAI’s shift from research pioneer to a dominant force in consumer and enterprise applications.
Vijaye Raji’s Rise to OpenAI’s C-Suite
Vijaye Raji, a seasoned tech leader with roots in Puducherry, India, brings a wealth of experience to OpenAI. Starting his career coding in a library at age 12, Raji spent a decade at Microsoft, contributing to tools like SQL Server modeling and the Visual Studio editor. He later led large-scale consumer engineering at Meta, overseeing projects like Facebook Messenger, Marketplace, and Gaming. In 2021, he founded Statsig, a platform specializing in A/B testing and feature flagging, which scaled to a $1.1 billion valuation with clients including Microsoft, Notion, and OpenAI itself. As CTO of Applications, Raji will report to Fidji Simo, OpenAI’s CEO of Applications, and oversee product engineering for ChatGPT and Codex, focusing on infrastructure and product integrity.
Statsig Acquisition Bolsters OpenAI’s Capabilities
The $1.1 billion all-stock acquisition of Statsig, pending regulatory approval, marks one of OpenAI’s largest deals to date, following its $6.5 billion acquisition of Jony Ive’s AI hardware startup in July 2024. Statsig’s expertise in real-time experimentation and data-driven decision-making will enhance OpenAI’s ability to rapidly iterate and optimize products like ChatGPT and Codex. The Seattle-based Statsig team will join OpenAI but continue operating independently, serving clients like Atlassian and Figma. “This acquisition is a game-changer for scaling safe, reliable AI applications,” said Simo, emphasizing Statsig’s role in accelerating OpenAI’s product development pipeline.
Leadership Reshuffle to Drive Growth
OpenAI’s leadership shake-up reflects its ambition to carve out applications as a standalone pillar. Fidji Simo, who joined as CEO of Applications on August 18, 2025, after leading Instacart, is driving this transformation. Alongside Raji’s appointment, Srinivas Narayanan, a key figure in ChatGPT’s development, has been named CTO of B2B Applications, reporting to COO Brad Lightcap. Narayanan will focus on enterprise solutions for startups, corporations, and government clients. Meanwhile, Chief Product Officer Kevin Weil is transitioning to Vice President of AI for Science, partnering with Chief Research Officer Mark Chen to explore AI’s scientific applications. This restructuring positions OpenAI to dominate both consumer and enterprise markets.
Strategic Implications for OpenAI’s Future
The Statsig acquisition and Raji’s appointment signal OpenAI’s evolution from a research-focused lab to a product-driven powerhouse. With ChatGPT’s annualized revenue reaching $12 billion in 2025 and projected to hit $20 billion by year-end, the company is doubling down on infrastructure to support its growing user base. Raji’s expertise in scaling consumer products at Meta and building Statsig’s experimentation tools will be critical in ensuring ChatGPT and Codex remain intuitive and reliable. Industry analysts see this as a response to intensifying competition from rivals like Anthropic and Google, with OpenAI aiming to maintain its edge in AI application development.
A New Chapter for India’s Tech Talent
Raji’s ascent to OpenAI’s leadership highlights the growing global influence of Indian-origin engineers. Born in Puducherry, his journey from coding enthusiast to tech visionary mirrors the rise of Indian talent in Silicon Valley. “Joining OpenAI is a unique opportunity to advance AI that solves real-world problems,” Raji said in a statement, expressing enthusiasm for integrating Statsig’s tools into OpenAI’s mission. His appointment also aligns with OpenAI’s plans to explore India for a massive AI data center under its Stargate initiative, signaling deeper ties with the country’s tech ecosystem.
