Today CSR has emerged as a significant theme in the global business community and is gradually becoming a mainstream activity. These trends have contributed to the pressure on companies to operate in an economically, socially and environmentally sustainable way. A well-managed CSR creates social and environmental value, while supporting company’s business objectives and enhancing relationships with key stakeholders and customers.
Corporate Responsibility, as a concept, in practice and its place in business strategy is evolving rapidly. The journey has been a long one, from a focus on corporate philanthropy to CSR to the current preoccupation with Sustainability.
Indian businesses have been at the forefront of this journey, creating several pioneering models on the road to CSR and inclusion.
Another noteworthy trend to note is the emerging interest of CSR among SMEs in India. Many units are looking for sound CSR advice and ways to infuse CSR into their business and making it cost-effective and impactful at the same time.
By formally including CSR under Clause 135 of the recently passed Companies Bill 2012, the Government of India has in a way clarified the construct of CSR in India by suggesting that it is a set of actions of a company that benefits society at large, which inter alia includes communities and the environment. Formulated by the Ministry of Corporate Affairs (MCA), the Companies Bill specifies that CSR is an important area of functioning for corporates and warrants Board level leadership and follow through. This has further reiterated the fact that CSR is expected to be a core corporate function of business entities.
