NEW DELHI: In recognition of its sustained efforts for improvement of quality life of underprivileged through various innovative Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiatives taken up by NMDC, it has been conferred with India Pride Award for CSR excellence for the year 2008-09.
Rana Som, Chairman cum Managing Director, NMDC Ltd., received the award from Sri P Chidambaram, Hon’ble Union Minister for Home Affairs at a function organized at New Delhi on 09.10.2009.
Since its inception, NMDC, a premier mining PSU with Navratna status has been contributing its mite to help people by providing facilities for healthcare, education, civic amenities etc. and imparting training for development of skills for better employability including self employment to improve quality and dignity of life of the people living in the surrounding areas of its projects.

Around 58 villages have been adopted for integrated development in Bailadila area of Chhattisgarh State. While it has been providing free medical treatment to locals in its projects Hospitals, it has introduced ‘Hospital on Wheels’ facility during 2008-09 in order to provide Healthcare at the doorsteps of remote villagers.
A Scholarship scheme to motivate SC/ST students to pursue study beyond 8th class has been introduced and over 7000 scholarships have been awarded during 2008-09. NMDC has partnered with Govt. of Chhattisgarh for establishment of a Medical college in Jagdalpur, Chhattisgarh.
It has launched a mid-day meal programme in Bellary sector, Karnataka covering 10,000 children. Skill development programs like Electrical, Mechanical, Carpentry Trades etc., have been conducted to generate sustainable employment generation opportunities which are yielding livelihood to the trained youth.

NMDC is also actively collaborating with State Govts. of Chhattisgarh & Karnataka for creation of various infrastructure facilities viz, roads, culverts, community halls, etc, apart from construction of houses for slum dwellers in Bellary. NMDC has taken keen interest in promoting tribal games like Archery, Kho-Kho, Handball etc and tribal culture.
