NALCO’s CSR initiatives focused on healthcare, education, clean water, environmental sustainability, and rural development, benefiting thousands across Odisha’s mining and smelting regions.

NEW DELHI (India CSR): NALCO’s CSR expenditure grew by 21.3% in FY 2024-25, rising from Rs. 50.53 crore in FY 2023-24 to Rs. 61.30 crore in FY 2024-25. The company also exceeded its statutory CSR obligation in both years—spending Rs. 50.53 crore against a mandated Rs. 48.15 crore in FY 2023-24 and Rs. 61.30 crore against a requirement of Rs. 57.93 crore in FY 2024-25 – under Section 135 of the Companies Act, 2013

This consistent rise underscores NALCO’s expanding social footprint, with major investments channelled toward sustainable rural development, community healthcare, education, and environmental initiatives across Odisha’s industrial regions.

CSR Focus Areas

The company’s CSR activities during the year were primarily implemented through NALCO Foundation, which serves as its dedicated CSR arm. The initiatives focused on healthcare, education, drinking water supply, environmental sustainability, rural development, and socio-economic empowerment of communities, particularly in the periphery villages of its mining and smelting operations.

Expenditure Details

As per the company’s annual disclosures, NALCO’s average net profit for the last three financial years stood at Rs. 2,896.64 crore, mandating a CSR spend of Rs. 57.93 crore (2%). Against this, the company spent Rs. 61.14 crore on CSR projects and Rs. 16.22 lakh on administrative overheads, resulting in a total outlay of Rs. 61.30 crore for FY 2024–25.

There was no unspent amount, and the company did not report any surplus or set-off carried forward. The total CSR expenditure exceeded the minimum requirement by Rs. 3.37 crore.

The committee was chaired by Independent Director S. R. Patel, with members including the Director (Production), Director (HR), and Director (Finance). The company confirmed compliance with the Companies Act and SEBI Listing Regulations for CSR governance.

Key Flagship Initiatives

Mobile Health Units (MHUs): Operating for over a decade, these units provided doorstep healthcare services to over 1.2 lakh people across 160 peripheral villages near the Mines & Refinery (M&R) Complex at Damanjodi and 52 villages around the Smelter & Power (S&P) Complex at Angul.

Multi-Specialty Outpatient Department (OPD): Run in collaboration with the Lions Club, Angul, the OPD catered to around 18,000–20,000 patients with specialized care from physicians, pediatricians, and gynecologists.

Support to Aspirational District Programme: NALCO contributed to public health initiatives in Malkangiri district, supporting programmes targeting anaemia, sickle-cell disease, and tuberculosis control under the Department of Public Enterprises, Ministry of Finance.

Compliance and Transparency

NALCO confirmed that no funds were transferred to the Unspent CSR Account or any Schedule VII fund. The company also did not create any capital assets through CSR spending during FY 2024–25.
