Akshay Kumar shines as the real-life hero who saved 65 miners trapped in a coal mine in West Bengal in 1989.
A daring rescue operation
Mission Raniganj: The Great Bharat Rescue is a 2023 Hindi-language disaster film directed by Tinu Suresh Desai and produced by Pooja Entertainment. The film is based on the true story of Jaswant Singh Gill, an additional chief mining engineer at Coal India, who devised an ingenious method to rescue 65 miners who were stuck in the flooded Mahabir Colliery in Raniganj, West Bengal, for over 40 hours.
The film stars Akshay Kumar as Gill and Parineeti Chopra as his wife Nirdosh Kaur Gill. The film also features Kumud Mishra, Pavan Malhotra, Ravi Kishan, Varun Badola, Dibyendu Bhattacharya, Rajesh Sharma and others in supporting roles.
A sincere performance by Akshay Kumar
Akshay Kumar delivers a sincere and convincing performance as Gill, who shows immense courage, determination and leadership in the face of adversity. Kumar portrays Gill’s calmness, confidence and humour with ease and grace. He also pays a fitting tribute to the real-life hero who risked his own life to save others.
Parineeti Chopra, who plays Gill’s wife, has a limited role but does justice to her part. She shows the emotional turmoil of a wife who is worried about her husband’s safety but also supports him in his mission. The chemistry between Kumar and Chopra is natural and believable.
The other actors who play the miners, the officials and the media also deliver decent performances. They add to the drama and tension of the film. However, some of the characters are underdeveloped and their stories are sidelined in favour of Kumar’s heroics.
A well-paced thriller with some flaws
The film is well-paced and keeps the audience engaged and invested in the rescue operation. The screenplay by Vipul K Rawal has several hard-hitting and emotional moments that make the film impactful. The cinematography by Aseem Mishra captures the dark and claustrophobic atmosphere of the mine as well as the scenic beauty of the UK, where some portions of the film are shot. The music by Satinder Sartaaj, Prem-Hardeep, Arko, Vishal Mishra and Gaurav Chatterji is decent but not memorable. The background score by Sandeep Shirodkar is effective and adds to the thrill of the film.
However, the film also has some flaws that prevent it from being a masterpiece. The first half of the film takes too long to set up the plot and is overloaded with technical jargon and machinery details that are hard to follow. The film also focuses more on Kumar’s actions and efforts than on the ordeal of the miners who are trapped in the mine. The film does not explore Gill’s personal life or background much and only sticks to the material that is already available. The dialogues by Deepak Kingrani are average and do not evoke much applause or cheer.
A must-watch for Akshay Kumar fans
Mission Raniganj is a gripping tale of courage and survival that showcases Akshay Kumar’s versatility and talent as an actor. The film is a tribute to Jaswant Singh Gill and his team who pulled off a miraculous rescue mission that saved 65 lives. The film is a must-watch for Akshay Kumar fans and for those who love thrillers based on true events.
