Tragic Incident in Rourkela: A local tea stall owner’s life was lost due to alleged noise pollution stemming from DJ music.

ROURKELA, Odisha (India CSR): The bustling city of Rourkela is in mourning after the sudden demise of Premnath Barabhaya, a beloved tea stall owner, allegedly due to the deafening noise of DJ music during a Saraswati Puja idol immersion ceremony. This tragic incident has sent shockwaves through the community, raising urgent concerns about the often-ignored dangers of noise pollution and its potential to cause serious health complications, even death.

The Incident

On the evening of Feb 22, 2024, Barabhaya, a 50-year-old resident of the Ganesh Market area, was reportedly attending the idol immersion ceremony near his stall. Local youths and shopkeepers had organized the event, complete with a DJ system brought in from Bhadrak district.

According to the media report, the music played at an excessively high decibel level throughout the ceremony, creating a cacophony that Barabhaya couldn’t escape.

The Unfolding Tragedy

Witnesses reported seeing Barabhaya visibly struggling with the loud noise. He soon started complaining of dizziness and discomfort. His condition rapidly deteriorated, and he was rushed to the Rourkela Government Hospital (RGH) in critical condition. Tragically, despite medical intervention, Barabhaya was declared dead on arrival.

Community Outrage and Investigation

The news of Barabhaya’s death sent shockwaves through the community. Locals, outraged by the alleged negligence and disregard for noise regulations, gathered in protest at the Raghunathpali police station, demanding a thorough investigation and appropriate action against those responsible.

The police have since seized the DJ equipment and launched a probe into the incident.

Experts Speak Out

Medical professionals have warned about the severe health risks associated with prolonged exposure to loud noise.

A leading cardiologist, stated, “Chronic exposure to high decibel sounds can lead to a multitude of health problems, including hearing loss, tinnitus, sleep disturbances, and even cardiovascular issues like heart attacks.

In individuals with pre-existing health conditions, like Mr. Barabhaya, the risks are even greater.”

***

A Call for Action

Barabhaya’s tragic demise serves as a stark reminder of the urgent need to address noise pollution in our communities. Stricter regulations and enforcement measures are crucial to curb excessive noise levels in public spaces.

Urban planning strategies that prioritize noise reduction, along with public awareness campaigns about the dangers of noise pollution, are essential to prevent such tragedies from happening again.

***

Moving Forward

As the community mourns the loss of Premnath Barabhaya, his death has sparked a crucial conversation about noise pollution and its potential to be deadly. Let his memory serve as a catalyst for action. We must all play our part in creating a quieter, healthier environment for ourselves and future generations.

This includes advocating for stricter noise regulations, supporting initiatives that promote noise reduction, and making conscious choices in our daily lives to minimize noise pollution. Only then can we ensure that such tragedies become a thing of the past.
