Lok Sabha Elections 2024: A letter from the Election Commission of India (ECI) indicating April 16 as a tentative date for the Lok Sabha elections 2024 created confusion among the public and the media. The Chief Electoral Officer of Delhi clarified that the date was only for reference and planning purposes and not the final schedule.
Letter sparks speculation
The letter, dated January 19, 2024, was addressed to the District Election Officers of Delhi and asked them to update the ECI Planner, a tool for coordinating and executing election-related activities. The letter mentioned April 16, 2024, as a tentative poll date for the Lok Sabha elections and outlined the start and end dates of various activities such as training, awareness, and expenditure monitoring.
The letter went viral on social media and some news outlets reported that the ECI had announced the date of the Lok Sabha elections. This led to speculation and confusion among the public, as the ECI usually announces the election schedule closer to the polls.
Clarification issued
The Chief Electoral Officer of Delhi, Dr. Ranbir Singh, issued a clarification on social media and through a press note on January 23, 2024. He explained that the date of April 16, 2024, was only for reference and planning purposes and had no bearing on the actual election schedule, which will be announced by the ECI in due course.
He said that the ECI Planner uses an imaginary poll date as a reference point to facilitate the timely execution of essential activities at the district level. He added that the date was mentioned only for officials to plan and prepare for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections and not for the public.
He also requested the media and the public to refrain from spreading any misinformation or speculation regarding the election date and to wait for the official announcement by the ECI.
Lok Sabha elections 2024
The Lok Sabha elections are expected to be held between April and May 2024 to elect 543 members of the Lower House of Parliament. The tenure of the 17th Lok Sabha is scheduled to end on June 16, 2024.
The previous general elections were held in April-May 2019, in which the National Democratic Alliance (NDA), led by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), won a landslide victory with 353 seats. The Indian National Congress (INC) and its allies, forming the Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance (INDIA), won 91 seats.
The upcoming Lok Sabha elections are likely to be influenced by various factors such as the COVID-19 pandemic, the economic situation, the farmers’ protests, the Ram Mandir inauguration, and the performance of the state governments.
The BJP, under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, is aiming to retain its majority and continue its development agenda. The INC, led by Mallikarjun Kharge, is hoping to revive its fortunes and present an alternative vision for the country. Other regional parties, such as the Samajwadi Party (SP), the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD), the Trinamool Congress (TMC), and the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), are also vying for a larger role in national politics.
The ECI is responsible for conducting free and fair elections in the country and ensuring the participation of all eligible voters. The ECI has introduced various measures to enhance the electoral process, such as the use of electronic voting machines (EVMs), voter verifiable paper audit trail (VVPAT), electoral bonds, and digital platforms.
The ECI has also launched various initiatives to increase voter awareness and turnout, such as the Systematic Voters’ Education and Electoral Participation (SVEEP) programme, the National Voters’ Service Portal (NVSP), and the Voter Helpline App.
The ECI has urged all citizens to exercise their right to vote and to follow the COVID-19 guidelines during the elections. The ECI has also appealed to the political parties and candidates to adhere to the Model Code of Conduct (MCC) and the expenditure limits during the campaign.
