Importance of Enabling Learning Content in Regional Languages through Digital

In the delicate journey of childhood, where young minds begin to explore the vast realm of knowledge, there’s a element that often goes unnoticed but holds immense significance – the language of learning.

For children, the classroom is not just a place to acquire knowledge; it’s a gateway to the world beyond, a space where curiosity flourishes, and where bonds of understanding and trust are forged. Learning and getting an education in their mother tongue provides a great deal of comfort to children since it’s the same language they speak at home with their families.

Why is it important to enable learning content in regional languages?

  • To ensure smooth transition from home to schools

Introduction of a foreign language suddenly can make transition from kindergarten to the key formative years of schooling challenging and uncomfortable for students. It is because while growing up they have interacted exclusively in their local language with friends, neighbors, and teachers. Therefore, the availability of learning content in the regional language can enable a sense of ease where students can confidently express their emotions and feelings and also ask questions without any hesitation.

  • To preserve indigenous knowledge:

A significant portion of our literary and historical work is written in regional languages such as Kannada, Tamil, and more. But students often struggle to connect with them due to their unfamiliarity with these languages. Prioritizing education and enabling learning in local languages can introduce students to the rich literary and historical legacy of India. This will not only enrich their learning but will also nurture a feeling of belonging and cultural consciousness, ultimately fostering a more comprehensive and informed generation of students.

  • To foster multilingual competence

With growing acceptance of western culture, many people in India remain unaware of their rich cultural heritage, native languages, and mother tongues. This is why enabling learning in regional languages will not only preserve linguistic diversity but also to empower individuals to engage more deeply with their cultural heritage and local communities. By providing learning opportunities in regional languages and English both (bilingual learning), we can bridge the gap between traditional knowledge and modern learning, ensuring that students can communicate effectively in both their mother tongue and globally dominant languages. This not only enhances cognitive development but also fosters a richer understanding of diverse cultures, encouraging a more inclusive and interconnected world.

  • To Promote Inclusivity

Some communities remain marginalized in society due to language barriers. Despite their efforts to communicate, their learning is confined to their own village because they lack the necessary resources for language exposure. Enabling learning in regional languages ensures that individuals from diverse linguistic backgrounds have equal access to knowledge and opportunities, breaking down language barriers that can perpetuate inequality. When education is delivered in regional languages, it empowers communities, fosters a deeper understanding of complex subjects, and enriches cultural diversity. This inclusivity not only bridges the educational divide but also nurtures a sense of belonging and identity, ultimately contributing to a more equitable and harmonious society.

Government’s efforts to promote local language content

  • National Education Policy 2020 emphasizes the use of the regional language as the medium of instruction, encouraging its continuation at least until Class 5, and ideally extending it to Class 8 and beyond.
  • On Mother Language Day in 2022, Prime Minister Narendra Modi Ji underscored the critical link between education in one’s mother tongue and the mental growth and development of children.

This emphasis on mother tongue education is pivotal because it aligns with the environment in which children are raised, where the local language predominates in their homes and schools. As per NEP 2020, linguistic foundation not only fosters a stronger connection to cultural roots but also enhances the comprehension and retention of knowledge, making it a key driver for the creation and impact of local language content.

The importance of enabling educational content in local languages cannot be overstated!

It is a powerful catalyst for inclusive and effective learning, bridging gaps and ensuring that education is inclusive and accessible to all. To make a meaningful impact on education initiatives, corporates, NGOs, hardware providers, and other ecosystem partners must recognize the potential of regional language content. By investing in the development and dissemination of learning resources in local languages, they can foster greater engagement, and comprehension among learners, thus, enriching linguistic diversity.
