Language is not just a means of communication; it’s a reflection of a culture, a repository of history, and a source of identity. On Hindi Diwas, a day dedicated to celebrating the rich linguistic heritage of India’s most widely spoken language, delve into the significance of promoting language diversity. Hindi, with its rich cultural heritage and widespread usage, plays a pivotal role in fostering unity, diversity, and a deep-rooted connection to our heritage, making it an integral part of our educational journey.

Hindi in Education

In recent years, there has been discussion on the role of Hindi within the Indian education system. While some individuals advocate for English as the exclusive medium of instruction in schools. A compelling case can be made for maintaining Hindi as a vital component of the curriculum. Hindi holds immense significance for effective learning, communication, job opportunities, and access to education.

National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 acknowledges the pivotal role of Hindi in education

The NEP clearly suggests,

“Hindi shall serve as the medium of instruction in schools situated in Hindi-speaking regions.”

Hence, NEP 2020 underscores the significance of Hindi in education and has incorporated measures to ensure its continued prominence within the school system. With Hindi, National Education Policy encourages the use of regional languages as the primary medium of instruction throughout the entire educational system, commencing from the primary school level.

Richness of Teaching and Learning in Hindi

Language medium of learning in schools should be in the medium students/teachers are most familiar with. Hindi is the most widely spoken and understood language in India and therefore should serve as the bridge through which knowledge is conveyed and understood. Hindi as a medium of instruction in schools leads to:

  • Effortless Transition: Using Hindi as the medium of instruction for students familiar with Hindi ensures a smooth and effortless transition from home to school. The student is already familiar with the language, making the early school years less intimidating and more comfortable.
  • Accelerated Learning: Eliminating language barriers allows students to progress through their learning at a faster pace. This allows them to dedicate their energy and attention to deepening their understanding of the subject matter rather than struggling with language barriers.
  • Enhanced Comprehension: Learning in Hindi/regional language allows the students to comprehend and absorb new concepts more easily. They grasp complex ideas and instructions without the added challenge of mastering a foreign language simultaneously.
  • Reduced Cognitive Load: Education in a Hindi/regional language eliminates the need for students to simultaneously learn and understand a language they are not familiar with. This significantly reduces the cognitive load on young learners, enabling them to focus more effectively on the core subject matter.
Promoting Language Diversity: Harnessing the Richness of Teaching and Learning in Hindi

Enabling Hindi and local languages as a medium of instruction not only enhances the learning experience but also plays a pivotal role in promoting inclusivity and diversity within our educational system. Essentially, aligning the medium of instruction with familiarity ensures that education remains accessible and be impactful for everyone, thus nurturing a more equitable and successful educational system.
