Happy Krishna Janmashtami 2023: Celebrating the Divine Birth of Lord Krishna
Happy Krishna Janmashtami 2023: Krishna Janmashtami is a Hindu festival that celebrates the birth of Krishna, the eighth avatar of Vishnu. It is observed on the eighth day (Ashtami) of the dark fortnight (Krishna Paksha) in the month of Bhadrapada, according to the Hindu lunisolar calendar. This year, Krishna Janmashtami falls on September 6 and 7, 2023, depending on the region and tradition. The festival is marked by various rituals, such as fasting, puja, night vigil, singing devotional songs, and breaking the dahi handi (a clay pot filled with curd). Krishna Janmashtami is also known as Krishnashtami, Gokulashtami, Yadukulashtami, or Srikrishna Jayanti.
Significance of Krishna Janmashtami
Krishna Janmashtami commemorates the birth of Krishna, who is considered to be one of the most popular and revered deities in Hinduism. He is believed to be the eighth incarnation of Vishnu, the preserver and protector of the universe. Krishna was born to Devaki and Vasudeva in a prison cell in Mathura, where they were held captive by Devaki’s brother Kansa, a tyrannical king who was prophesied to be killed by Devaki’s eighth son. To save Krishna from Kansa’s wrath, Vasudeva secretly carried him across the Yamuna river to Gokul, where he was raised by his foster parents Yashoda and Nanda. Krishna grew up as a mischievous and playful child, who charmed everyone with his divine flute and performed many miraculous deeds. He also played a pivotal role in the epic Mahabharata, where he became the friend and guide of Arjuna, one of the Pandava brothers. He imparted the Bhagavad Gita, a sacred scripture that contains his teachings on dharma (duty), karma (action), bhakti (devotion), and moksha (liberation).
How to celebrate Krishna Janmashtami
Krishna Janmashtami is celebrated with great devotion and enthusiasm by Hindus across the world. Some of the common ways to celebrate this festival are:
- Fasting: Many devotees observe a fast on this day, abstaining from food and water until midnight, when Krishna is believed to have been born. Some people also consume only fruits, milk, and other sattvic (pure) foods during the fast.
- Puja: People perform puja (worship) at their homes or temples, offering flowers, incense, lamps, fruits, sweets, and other items to Krishna. They also recite mantras, such as the Hare Krishna Mahamantra or the Vishnu Sahasranama (thousand names of Vishnu), and read or listen to stories from Krishna’s life.
- Night vigil: People stay awake till midnight or beyond, singing bhajans (devotional songs), kirtans (musical chants), or dancing in ecstasy. They also decorate their homes and temples with lights, flowers, balloons, and rangoli (colorful patterns). They place an idol or picture of baby Krishna in a cradle or a swing and rock it gently. They also dress up their children as Krishna or Radha (his consort) and enact scenes from his childhood.
- Dahi handi: This is a popular tradition in some regions of India, especially Maharashtra and Gujarat. It involves forming a human pyramid to reach a clay pot hung high from a rope or a pole. The pot contains curd or butter, which are associated with Krishna’s love for dairy products. The person who breaks the pot is called the Govinda or the leader of the group. This activity symbolizes Krishna’s playful nature and his stealing of butter from the gopis (cowherd girls).
- Sharing greetings: People also exchange greetings and wishes with their friends and family on this occasion. They send messages, quotes, images, or cards that express their love and devotion for Krishna.
