He is believed to be the eighth incarnation of Vishnu, the preserver and protector of the universe. Krishna was born to Devaki and Vasudeva in a prison cell in Mathura, where they were held captive by Devaki’s brother Kansa, a tyrannical king who was prophesied to be killed by Devaki’s eighth son. To save Krishna from Kansa’s wrath, Vasudeva secretly carried him across the Yamuna river to Gokul, where he was raised by his foster parents Yashoda and Nanda. Krishna grew up as a mischievous and playful child, who charmed everyone with his divine flute and performed many miraculous deeds. He also played a pivotal role in the epic Mahabharata, where he became the friend and guide of Arjuna, one of the Pandava brothers. He imparted the Bhagavad Gita, a sacred scripture that contains his teachings on dharma (duty), karma (action), bhakti (devotion), and moksha (liberation).

• Night vigil: People stay awake till midnight or beyond, singing bhajans (devotional songs), kirtans (musical chants), or dancing in ecstasy. They also decorate their homes and temples with lights, flowers, balloons, and rangoli (colorful patterns). They place an idol or picture of baby Krishna in a cradle or a swing and rock it gently. They also dress up their children as Krishna or Radha (his consort) and enact scenes from his childhood.
• Dahi handi: This is a popular tradition in some regions of India, especially Maharashtra and Gujarat. It involves forming a human pyramid to reach a clay pot hung high from a rope or a pole. The pot contains curd or butter, which are associated with Krishna’s love for dairy products. The person who breaks the pot is called the Govinda or the leader of the group. This activity symbolizes Krishna’s playful nature and his stealing of butter from the gopis (cowherd girls).
