Building a strong culture of corporate responsibility is important today because it can boost a company’s brand image and reputation. A responsible corporate culture can differentiate a company from its competitors and attract customers as well as talent who appreciate its value. Customers and stakeholders expect businesses to operate ethically by minimizing their environmental impact and contributing positively to society.

Significance of Bringing Corporate Responsibility Into Action

Actions speak louder than words. Businesses ought to embrace the journey towards creating a culture of corporate responsibility, as it can give them an opportunity for development, innovation, and creating a positive impact on society.

While embarking on this journey, here are some key aspects businesses should consider:

  • Leadership commitment: The management team is crucial in setting the tone for corporate organizational responsibility. When leaders actively participate and demonstrate their dedication to corporate responsibility, it automatically sends a compelling message to employees, clients, and stakeholders. Besides, their commitment and responsible practices foster a company culture that values ethical behaviour, sustainability, and social impact.
  • Create a sustainability plan: Businesses should develop a complete sustainability program that addresses environmental, social, and governance (E.S.G.) issues relevant to their organization. While setting clear goals and targets, they should establish mechanisms and track progress.
  • Implement responsible practices in operations: Businesses can adopt a safe and healthy work environment by including responsible practices in daily operations and decision-making processes. This includes incorporating sustainability into supply chain management, implementing environmentally friendly procedures, promoting diversity and inclusion, and ensuring fair labour practices.
  • Engage employees: Employees are an integral part of every organization. Hence, it is advisable to engage them in the corporate responsibility journey. Every organization should foster a culture that encourages its workforce to contribute ideas, take responsible initiatives, and actively participate in volunteering and engage in community welfare activities. Moreover, Human Resources should provide resources and arrange training programs for the employees to help them enhance their knowledge and understanding of corporate responsibilities.
  • Partnership and collaboration: To address significant societal challenges, businesses should collaborate with NGOs, government organizations, and industry peers. Moreover, they should look for opportunities to share best practices, learn from other organizations, and drive positive social change cooperatively.

How a Reputed Organization Built a Culture of Corporate Responsibility

While building a culture of corporate responsibility and bringing a positive societal change, one of the largest service providers to global publishers and eCommerce companies partnered with an aerospace startup to launch a satellite into outer Space. The program involved 750 teenage girls from 75 rural schools. Through this initiative, the company aimed to empower girls with the power of education and bring a social impact. The satellite launch initiative helped young girls from impoverished backgrounds with new opportunities that will enable them to explore different skill sets and, perhaps, even target careers in Space.

The company has also hosted the beneficiaries of one of its corporate social responsibility programs in collaboration with a Chennai-based non-profit organization.

The company felicitated its skill development program participants by awarding them certificates of completion. This CSR initiative sought to train young women from economically underprivileged families as General Duty Assistants (GDAs) to help support nurses at healthcare institutions and other patients needing primary care. The two-month program helps these women find sustainable employment.

That’s not all; the company has also donated essentials to villagers residing in Konda Village near Mumbai (Maharashtra). This was an initiative to help the underprivileged who have suffered during the pandemic. The company believes that a holistic development model should be at the core of sustainable change in rural India.

Responsible companies can thrive in changing societal expectations and emerging global challenges by focusing on long-term sustainability programs. They should put their utmost effort into driving social change and making the world a better place.
