The company has invested over USD 12 billion across its projects and operates on a mine-to-metal model, leveraging captive raw material resources.
ANGUL. Odisha (India CSR): Jindal Steel on Tuesday announced the commissioning of a new 3 million tonnes per annum (MTPA) Basic Oxygen Furnace (BOF) converter at its Angul integrated steel plant, enhancing the plant’s crude steelmaking capacity from 6 MTPA to 9 MTPA.
Major Capacity Addition
The company said the commissioning of the 250 MT BOF converter is a significant milestone in its expansion journey at Angul. With the first heat now tapped, the facility has achieved seamless integration of the newly-commissioned Blast Furnace 2 with the BOF converter, aligning hot metal generation with steelmaking capacity.
This synchronisation ensures higher throughput and efficiency into downstream rolling mills, enabling steady supplies of steel for infrastructure, energy, automotive, oil and gas, and real estate sectors.

Step Toward 12 MTPA Goal
Jindal Steel said that with the fresh commissioning, the Angul facility is moving closer to achieving its target of 12 MTPA within the current financial year. The expansion, the company added, marks a step toward bolstering India’s ambition of becoming self-reliant in steel production.
“The new BOF is now running, and the first heat has been tapped. With this, Angul gains real muscle in steelmaking. Every tonne we produce here strengthens India’s ability to rely on its own capacity,” Jindal Steel Chairman Naveen Jindal said.

Boost to Self-Reliance
The company highlighted that the expansion supports the government’s push for domestic steel capacity to meet growing demand in core sectors. By synchronising iron-making and steelmaking operations, Jindal Steel said it is able to ensure consistency in production volumes and quality, thereby reducing reliance on imports.
Industry experts noted that the addition of 3 MTPA at Angul brings Jindal Steel’s total capacity across locations closer to double digits, reinforcing its position as one of India’s leading private sector steelmakers.
