Infosys continues demonstrating a strong commitment to corporate social responsibility (CSR), with significant financial investments and a strategic focus on sustainable development.

BENGALURU (India CSR): Infosys has released its Integrated Annual Report for the fiscal year 2023-24, showcasing a robust commitment to corporate social responsibility (CSR). The company reported an impressive expenditure of ₹450.76 crore on various CSR initiatives, furthering its mission of sustainable community development. Additionally, ₹39.54 crore remains unspent, earmarked for ongoing projects to be utilized in compliance with CSR regulations.

Details of CSR Spending

Unspent Amounts and Transfers

In accordance with the Companies Act, 2013, Infosys has outlined the unspent CSR amounts for the preceding three fiscal years:

  1. Fiscal 2021: ₹49.52 crore (unspent)
  2. Fiscal 2022: ₹51.79 crore (₹9.14 crore transferred to unspent CSR account; ₹0.20 crore remaining)
  3. Fiscal 2023: ₹45.33 crore (₹45.33 crore transferred to unspent CSR account; ₹6.64 crore remaining)

The unspent balance for fiscal 2024, amounting to ₹39.54 crore, will be transferred to the unspent CSR account within 30 days from the end of the financial year. This ensures compliance with the Companies (Corporate Social Responsibility Policy) Rules, 2014, and its amendments.

Analyzing CSR Initiatives and Expenditures

Key Projects and Allocations

Infosys has diligently directed its CSR efforts towards impactful projects. The company has spent ₹455.67 crore, including a surplus of ₹3.04 crore, on various initiatives during fiscal 2024. The unspent balance is allocated for ongoing projects. Key projects include:

  • Healthcare Initiatives: Support for the rapid operationalization of the Advance Mother and Child Center at PGIMER Chandigarh, and medical equipment provision for the mother and child block at AIIMS.
  • Education Programs: Infosys Springboard, a digital literacy program, and STEM labs, online courses, and scholarships in collaboration with Ramakrishna Mission schools.

Analyzing Reasons for Unspent CSR Funds

Despite significant spending, Infosys has detailed reasons for not utilizing the full two percent of average net profits for CSR activities. The unspent balance of ₹39.54 crore is designated for ongoing projects, with plans to transfer these funds to the unspent CSR account and ensure compliance with CSR rules.

Commitment to Sustainable Development

Infosys’ CSR strategy emphasizes sustainable business practices, encompassing economic, environmental, and social imperatives. The company’s CSR activities focus on holistic community development, aiming to shape and share solutions that foster the development of both businesses and communities. Key focus areas include:

  • Education
  • Malnutrition and Health
  • Women Empowerment
  • Environmental Sustainability
  • Gender Equality
  • Rural Development
  • National Heritage and Culture
  • Disaster Management

Analysis and Insights

Infosys’ CSR expenditure of ₹450.76 crore is a testament to its commitment to societal development and sustainability. The allocation of funds towards diverse areas such as healthcare, education, and environmental sustainability reflects a holistic approach to CSR. Notably, the unspent balance of ₹39.54 crore, while earmarked for ongoing projects, raises questions about the execution timeline and the efficiency of project implementations.

The company’s expansion of CSR activities beyond statutory requirements, particularly in the USA, Europe, and Australia, demonstrates a global perspective in its CSR strategy. This international focus not only enhances Infosys’ brand reputation but also underscores its dedication to global humanitarian causes.

Infosys’ detailed reporting and adherence to CSR regulations highlight its transparency and accountability. However, the consistent presence of unspent CSR funds over the past few years indicates a need for more streamlined project management and timely execution.
