India CSR recently caught up with IndiGo to discuss their recent developments.
The article explores IndiGo’s commitment to sustainability, through their set goals for 2023, measures being taken to achieve them and the impactful CSR initiatives undertaken by IndiGoReach in the areas of education, women empowerment, and environmental preservation.
IndiGo’s Sustainability Goals for 2023
IndiGo, one of India’s leading airlines, is committed to an ESG strategy that balances ambition and the practical limitations of the aviation sector. As of now, their core target for 2023 is related to emissions from jet fuel. IndiGo aims to reduce the emissions intensity from their jet aviation fuel consumption by 18% between FY 2015-16 and FY 2022-23. Their decarbonisation plan focuses on cutting fuel emissions, introducing SAF and implementing carbon offsetting measures. A key element of the strategy is renewing the fleet with more fuel-efficient Airbus A320 and A321neo aircraft.
Spokesperson of IndiGo said “We have also signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Indian Institute of Petroleum (Dehradun) in order to support the development of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (‘SAF’). Flight operations are also taking a number of initiatives to achieve this including single engine taxi, reduced flap landing and takeoff, descent profile optimization, weight reduction due to reduction in hold fuel and route saving among others.”
Clear Skies for Tomorrow: IndiGo’s Efforts towards SAF
IndiGo, which recently joined the ‘Clear Skies for Tomorrow’ campaign, aims to achieve the goal of 10% SAF on all flights by 2030. Currently, the Indian Institute of Petroleum (Dehradun) is awaiting certification of the SAF technology for IndiGo to progress further. Spokesperson of IndiGo said “As mentioned earlier, prior to joining the ‘Clear Skies for Tomorrow’ campaign, we had signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with IIP in order to support the development of SAF. We have also had detailed discussions with Indian Oil Corporation Limited who are working towards blending SAF into jet fuel starting from 2024-25.”
