India’s Cosmetic Surgery Boom Driven by Social Media—But Transparency Gaps Raise Safety Concerns

IIT Bombay Alumni Launches Hospia, India’s First Dedicated Platform for Cosmetic Healthcare Discovery.

HYDERABAD: As cosmetic and aesthetic procedures gain popularity across India, a growing number of patients are choosing practitioners based on social media content rather than verified medical credentials – raising concerns about safety, transparency, and informed decision-making.

Short-form videos, before-and-after transformations, and influencer-led promotions have significantly increased awareness and acceptance of treatments such as hair transplants, rhinoplasty, liposuction, and advanced skin procedures. For younger consumers, particularly Gen Z, platforms like Instagram and YouTube have become a primary discovery channel for aesthetic healthcare.

However, this shift has also made it harder for patients to distinguish between qualified medical professionals and unverified providers.

In many cases, patients spend hours researching procedures online without clear visibility into whether a practitioner has formal surgical training, relevant specialisation, or valid registration with medical authorities. As a result, popularity and online presence are increasingly acting as substitutes for clinical credibility.

Regulatory bodies have begun to flag these risks. The National Medical Commission (NMC) has stated that cosmetic procedures should ideally be performed by practitioners with formal surgical training, such as MCh/DNB in Plastic Surgery or MD/DNB in Dermatology with appropriate procedural expertise. Despite this guidance, such qualifications are often not easily verifiable during the patient’s discovery journey.

At the state level, disciplinary actions by the Telangana State Medical Council (TSMC) have highlighted cases of practitioners allegedly misrepresenting credentials, performing procedures without adequate training, and operating from unregistered facilities – underscoring growing concerns around patient safety.

While patient safety is a visible concern, the shift toward social media-led discovery is also changing how doctors are evaluated.

Highly trained surgeons and dermatologists – often with years of academic and clinical experience – traditionally build their reputation through referrals, hospital affiliations, and peer recognition. These signals, however, do not translate easily into algorithm-driven platforms.

Meanwhile, practitioners with stronger marketing presence or influencer collaborations can achieve significantly higher visibility, regardless of clinical depth or procedural experience.

This has created an uneven playing field where digital reach is beginning to compete with medical qualification as a signal of trust.

Against this backdrop, Hyderabad-based healthtech startup Hospia is building a platform focused on verification and structured discovery in cosmetic healthcare.

The platform enables patients to review practitioner profiles that include qualifications, areas of specialisation, registration details, experience, and clinic information before booking consultations—aiming to bring greater transparency into a fragmented and often opaque decision-making process.

“Aesthetic healthcare is increasingly being discovered on platforms that were never designed for medical decisions,” said Ashok, founder of Hospia and an alumnus of IIT Bombay. “When popularity becomes a substitute for credibility, the risk shifts to the patient. Informed decisions shouldn’t be optional in this category.”

Unlike general healthcare marketplaces, Hospia focuses specifically on cosmetic and aesthetic procedures, allowing for more targeted search and comparison. The platform also offers software tools for clinics, including digital listings, appointment management, teleconsultation, and patient communication systems.

Hospia is currently active across major metropolitan cities including Hyderabad, Bengaluru, Mumbai, Delhi, and Chennai, and has over 700 clinics listed on its platform.
