NEW DELHI (India CSR): For nearly three decades, Hyundai Motor India Limited (HMIL) has been more than a car manufacturer—it has been a trusted partner in India’s journey toward progress. With a deep-rooted commitment to its global vision of ‘Progress for Humanity’ and the ‘CONTINUE’ framework for Creating Shared Value (CSV), HMIL’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) efforts in Financial Year 2024-25 have left an indelible mark on communities across the nation. Through its CSR arm, the Hyundai Motor India Foundation (HMIF), HMIL invested Rs 65.24 crore, directly impacting 2.14 million lives across 25 states and Union Territories. This investment, detailed in HMIL’s 2025 Annual Report, reflects a blend of empathy and innovation, transforming lives through initiatives in environmental sustainability, healthcare, education, and road safety, proving that true progress uplifts both people and the planet.

Financial Commitment: Strategic and Transparent

HMIL’s CSR expenditure for FY 2024-25 totaled Rs 65.24 crore, aligning with its obligation under the Companies Act, 2013, which mandates 2% of average net profits. The company’s CSR obligation was Rs 120.62 crore, based on its average net profits over the past three years. Of this, HMIL allocated Rs 63.97 crore to ongoing and new projects, Rs 1.08 crore to administrative overheads, and Rs 0.19 crore to impact assessments. The remaining Rs 55.37 crore for multi-year projects was transferred to a dedicated Unspent CSR Account, ensuring compliance and continuity for long-term initiatives. HMIL also utilized unspent funds from previous years to maximize impact, reflecting a strategic and transparent approach to social investment.

Earth: Building a Greener India

HMIL’s environmental initiatives under the ‘Earth’ pillar are pivotal in advancing India’s sustainability goals, aligning with its target of carbon neutrality by 2045 and 100% renewable energy (RE100) by 2025.

1. Renewable Energy Leadership: HMIL achieved 88% renewable energy usage in FY 2024-25, supported by partnerships with Fourth Partner Energy for 75 MW solar and 43 MW wind power plants in Tamil Nadu. This contributed to a 41.8% reduction in Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions, preventing 75,282 tonnes of CO2 over three years.

2. Ecogram by Hyundai: This Gurugram-based waste management initiative processed 2,000 kg of wet waste and 5,000 kg of dry waste daily, recycling 11.15 lakh kg of waste and preventing 1.44 lakh kg of CO2 emissions. It generated 200 kW of electricity daily via biogas, earning the ‘Doing Good Through Business for Planet’ award.

3. IONIQ Forest and Agroforestry: The IONIQ Forest project planted thousands of trees around HMIL’s Chennai facility, contributing to 21,811 tonnes of CO2 removal. Agroforestry in Andhra Pradesh enhanced tribal farmland productivity, generating Rs 40.4 crore in community income.

4. Water Conservation: HMIL met 80% of its water needs through rainwater harvesting and recycled sources, with six ponds holding 335,000 kiloliters. Rural pond restoration in Gurugram improved groundwater recharge by 132,622 cubic meters, benefiting 8,200 people and reducing 59.25 tonnes of eCO2.

Hope: Uplifting Communities Through Healthcare and Education

The ‘Hope’ pillar reflects HMIL’s commitment to empowering marginalized communities through healthcare, education, and inclusion.

1. Sparsh Sanjeevani: This flagship healthcare program reached 1.3 million individuals across 16 states via 52 telemedicine centers and 10 mobile medical units. Following the Awareness, Diagnosis, Cure, and Referral (ADCR) framework, it achieved an SROI of 1:9.20, generating Rs 9.20 in social value per rupee invested. It won the ‘Impact Through Social Project for Health’ award.

2. Hyundai Hope Scholarship: Supporting 720 students, including 440 girls and 60 students with disabilities, this program enabled studies at institutions like IIT Madras. The ‘Vidya Vahini’ project was named the ‘Best Project in Education and Basic Literacy’.

3. Samarth by Hyundai: This initiative empowered 20 para-athletes, with four competing at the Paris Paralympics, and provided 22 assistive devices. It also supported blind cricket, earning the ‘Best Sports Promotion Project’ award.

4. Art for Hope: This grant program nurtured artistic talent through financial aid and mentorship, winning the ‘Best CSR Event’ award.

Mobility: Driving Safer Roads and Skilled Communities

HMIL’s ‘Mobility’ pillar enhances road safety and community skills, aligning with its ‘Beyond Mobility’ vision.

1. Dhyan-Do Initiative: This road safety program reached 34,000 commercial drivers in Gurugram and Faridabad through health check-ups and training. A Mobile Road Safety Simulation Machine educated 10,000 students across 50 schools, while street plays promoted safe road behavior.

2. Traffic Engineering Centre: In collaboration with Haryana Police, HMIL established a center in Gurugram with 1,100 surveillance cameras for real-time traffic monitoring. Infrastructure upgrades in Tamil Nadu included LED traffic lights and solar blinkers.

3. Skill Development: HMIL trained community members in innovative technologies, fostering economic empowerment and continuous improvement.

Governance and Recognition

HMIL’s CSR activities are overseen by a CSR Committee, chaired by John Martin Thompson, ensuring alignment with the ‘CONTINUE’ vision and UN Sustainable Development Goals. Third-party impact assessments by 4th Wheel Social Impact validated the effectiveness of seven key projects. HMIL’s transparency, reflected in its 2025 Sustainability Report adhering to GRI standards, earned it recognition as a ‘Champion of CSR’ at the ESG Impact Summit.
