Godrej Consumer Products Limited Achieves Record Rs 38.56 Crores in CSR Expenditure for FY 2024-25, Focusing on Health, Livelihoods, and Sustainability

NEW DELHI (India CSR): In the financial year 2024-25, Godrej Consumer Products Limited (GCPL) emerged as one of the leading Indian corporates, demonstrating the importance of linking business growth with community development. The company invested Rs 38.56 crores in Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) projects, not just meeting but surpassing its statutory obligation under the Companies Act, 2013. What makes this achievement significant is the way GCPL channels resources toward addressing some of India’s most pressing challenges—public health, women’s empowerment, environmental sustainability, and rural livelihoods. Guided by its mantra of “People and planet, alongside profit,” GCPL has positioned itself as a pioneer in creating long-term social impact. This philosophy acknowledges that profitability is incomplete if communities remain vulnerable. Through flagship projects like Project EMBED, Salon-I, and targeted environmental stewardship programs, GCPL has amplified the idea that CSR is not a burden but an investment into the nation’s collective future.

Financial Commitment: Surpassing the Mandated Requirement

CSR law in India requires large companies to invest at least 2% of their average net profit from the past three years in social initiatives. For FY 2024-25, GCPL’s average net profit stood at Rs 1,924.41 crores, setting its statutory CSR obligation at Rs 38.49 crores. Instead of restricting itself to the mandated amount, GCPL went further, spending Rs 38,55,83,631.95, which is Rs 7 lakh more than required. This deliberate overspend is not accidental—it is an indicator of the company’s strong governance culture and proactive leadership. The company also dedicated ₹1.10 crores to administrative overheads, ensuring smooth management of CSR projects, and Rs 60.33 lakhs to impact assessment activities, strengthening accountability. By exceeding compliance requirements, GCPL reinforced its “Good & Green” strategy, where CSR is viewed as a growth enabler and not merely a tick-box exercise. This financial commitment reflects both legal adherence and an intentional push to generate measurable societal outcomes.

INDIA CSR NEWS ANALYSIS

Project EMBED: Driving Malaria Elimination and Vector Control

One of GCPL’s most impactful initiatives in FY25 was Project EMBED (Elimination of Mosquito-Borne Endemic Diseases). Launched in 2015, this program aligns with India’s ambitious goal of eliminating malaria by 2030. The project’s scope expanded during FY25, covering over 21 lakh households across 11,000 villages in 23 districts, and extending into 18 urban centers for dengue and chikungunya control. Through strategic awareness campaigns, behavior change communication, and preventive interventions, EMBED benefitted 26.4 million people through malaria-focused activities and 28.4 million people through dengue-related programs. Independent analysis showed that the initiative delivered a Social Return on Investment (SROI) of 1:5—for every rupee invested, communities gained ₹5 in terms of reduced treatment costs, fewer hospitalizations, and improved work productivity. The program demonstrates how well-structured CSR can achieve nationwide health benefits, reduce systemic costs, and contribute directly to achieving United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Empowering Women Through Salon-I and Livelihoods

CSR at GCPL is also about enabling financial independence and dignity for marginalized groups, especially women. The Salon-I program stood out in FY25 as one of the largest livelihood initiatives in India. The program trained 2,08,397 women in beauty, wellness, and salon management, equipping them with income-generating skills. Many beneficiaries were from rural and semi-urban backgrounds with limited economic opportunities. With targeted CSR funding of Rs 36.24 crores, GCPL ensured that these women not only received technical training but also access to entrepreneurship pathways, enabling them to start micro-salons and support their families. Beyond Salon-I, GCPL is deeply invested in diversity and inclusion at the organizational level. Women currently represent 28% of the company’s white-collar workforce, and future plans aim to expand inclusivity for LGBTQIA+ and persons with disabilities. Notably, 15% of executive compensation is directly linked to People & Planet goals, ensuring leadership is accountable for social progress.

Environmental Stewardship: Achieving Global Recognition

Sustainability is one of GCPL’s strongest pillars, reflected in its Good & Green framework. The company has integrated climate action, water stewardship, renewable energy adoption, and waste circularity into its CSR and business strategies. In FY25, GCPL achieved water positivity, recharging 12 times the water it consumed. Rainwater harvesting projects collected 26,600 kilolitres annually, and consumption per ton of finished products reduced by 34% compared to the 2010 baseline. On energy, GCPL met its 2025 renewable energy target ahead of schedule, with 35% of global energy and 42% of Indian energy sourced from renewables. A cogeneration biofuel plant at Malanpur significantly reduced emissions, contributing to a 47% cut in GHG intensity, surpassing the 2026 goal. GCPL’s waste management programs diverted nearly 15,000 MT of community waste, with specific achievements in Malanpur, Assam, and Goa. These efforts positioned GCPL at #2 globally on the Dow Jones Sustainability Index, marking it a true environmental leader.

Targeted Investments in Aspirational Districts

In addition to national-scale projects, GCPL focused on aspirational districts identified by NITI Aayog, ensuring CSR spending addresses India’s most underserved areas. These targeted interventions helped bridge critical gaps in healthcare, sanitation, and education. In FY25, GCPL invested Rs 13.06 lakhs in Bastar (Chhattisgarh), Rs 18.62 lakhs in Kondagaon (Chhattisgarh), ₹41.85 lakhs in Sonbhadra (Uttar Pradesh), Rs 8.75 lakhs in Vidisha (Madhya Pradesh), and Rs 38.21 lakhs in Gadchiroli (Maharashtra). These districts face chronic development challenges, and GCPL’s CSR funds provided resources for health awareness, sanitation projects, and community skill-building. By directing funds to regions with the greatest need, GCPL reinforced that CSR must go beyond broad national agendas and respond to localized community challenges. This district-level focus also demonstrates the company’s adaptability—deploying CSR in ways that are context-sensitive and capable of producing measurable improvement in quality of life for vulnerable populations.

Transparency and Accountability in CSR Spending

CSR effectiveness lies in execution and accountability, not just financial outlay. GCPL reinforced its credibility by allocating Rs 60.33 lakhs for independent impact assessments. This ensured each program was evaluated against outcomes like health improvements, income growth, and environmental sustainability. By publishing a detailed CSR Annual Report for FY25, GCPL maintained transparency with shareholders, policymakers, and communities. The inclusion of granular data—ranging from household-level malaria coverage to reductions in landfill waste—underscores a culture of evidence-based CSR. Importantly, GCPL exceeded compliance requirements by not only meeting the mandated spend but also showing clear, data-backed impact pathways. This practice has strengthened stakeholder trust and enhanced its global reputation, visible in its rising sustainability scores. At a time when “greenwashing” is under scrutiny, GCPL stands out as a company that treats CSR as an investment in credibility, social capital, and shared value creation rather than a statutory checkbox.

You Learn

GCPL’s Rs 38.56 crore CSR spending in FY 2024-25 is more than a financial statistic—it is a reflection of the company’s ethos of balancing profit with purpose. From eliminating vector-borne diseases to creating income opportunities for women, from conserving water to diverting waste from landfills, GCPL’s programs cut across multiple dimensions of human and environmental well-being. Its targeted investments in aspirational districts show that CSR is not just about scale, but also about reaching the right communities. By surpassing statutory mandates, tying leadership incentives to sustainability goals, and earning recognition on the Dow Jones Sustainability Index, GCPL has become a global benchmark in responsible business. As India accelerates toward inclusive development and climate action, GCPL’s model proves that long-term profitability is most sustainable when communities and the environment thrive alongside it. This integration of People, Planet, and Profit will define corporate leadership in the decades ahead.
