NLCIL has been actively involved in CSR activities for several years, and its spending in various focus areas is commendable

NEW DELHI: NLC India Limited is a public sector enterprise that operates under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Coal, which is part of the government of India. NLC India Limited (NLCIL) is conducting a range of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiatives, programs, and projects, which are selected from the Schedule VII items of the Companies Act 2013. These activities are carried out in accordance with NLCIL’s CSR Policy, which has been formulated based on the aforementioned Act and subsequent guidelines.

NLC India Limited (NLCIL) is implementing diverse pro-people initiatives as part of its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) program. NLCIL’s CSR spending must align with the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), and the company must strive to make a positive impact on society and the environment.

CSR in India

Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) has become a critical aspect of the business world in recent years. Companies are increasingly recognizing their responsibility to give back to society and support community development. In India, the Companies Act of 2013 mandates that companies with a net worth of at least INR 500 crore or a turnover of INR 1,000 crore or more or a net profit of INR 5 crore or more must spend at least 2% of their average net profit of the preceding three years on CSR activities.

CSR in Tamil Nadu

One such company that has been actively involved in CSR activities is NLC India Limited (NLCIL), a leading Public Sector Enterprise. NLCIL has been implementing various CSR activities/programmes/projects in Tamil Nadu, choosing from Schedule VII items of Companies Act 2013, as per its CSR Policy. The company has reported its CSR spending for the past four fiscal years, i.e., from 2018-19 to 2021-22.

FY 2021-22: Rs. 29.78 crore on CSR activities

The data provided by NLCIL shows that the company has been consistently investing in various CSR areas. In FY 2021-22, the company spent INR 29.78 crore on CSR activities, which is a significant decrease compared to the previous year’s spending of INR 44.40 crore. The primary focus area of the company’s CSR spending in 2021-22 was Health Care, Family Welfare, and Sanitation, where it spent INR 15.94 crore. This was followed by Education, including Special Education, Vocational skills, and Scholarships, where the company spent INR 12.85 crore.

The company also spent INR 0.30 crore on Promoting Sports in Rural Areas, INR 0.69 crore on Providing Link Roads/Access for Rural Development, and INR 0.02 crore on Women Empowerment/Gender Equality. However, the company did not report any spending on Measures for the welfare of Armed Forces or Heritage, Arts, and Culture in FY 2021-22.

It is noteworthy that the company’s spending on Environmental Sustainability decreased significantly in FY 2020-21 and FY 2021-22 compared to the previous years. In FY 2018-19, the company spent INR 2.29 crore on Environmental Sustainability, which decreased to INR 1.06 crore in FY 2019-20 and further decreased to INR 0.24 crore in FY 2020-21. In FY 2021-22, the company did not report any spending on Environmental Sustainability.

CSR spending has become an essential aspect of corporate governance, and companies must prioritize CSR spending to improve the well-being of society. NLCIL has been actively involved in CSR activities for several years, and its spending in various focus areas is commendable. However, the significant decrease in overall spending in FY 2021-22 compared to the previous years is a concern. The company must continue to focus on its CSR activities and invest more in areas that need attention, such as Environmental Sustainability, Women Empowerment/Gender Equality, and Measures for the welfare of Armed Forces.

The details of various CSR activities implemented by NLCIL in the state of Tamil Nadu from FY 2018-19 to FY 2021-22 are furnished below:
