Team Computers takes on climate change through a forestry initiative as part of their CSR efforts.

NEW DELHI (India CSR): The repercussions of climate change are increasingly evident in our daily lives, with rising sea levels, melting glaciers, and extreme weather patterns wreaking havoc on global ecosystems. Urgent action is required to address this crisis, including reducing reliance on fossil fuels, transitioning to renewable energy sources, and improving energy efficiency. Conservation efforts, ecosystem restoration, and reforestation are also crucial in mitigating the effects of climate change and protecting biodiversity for future generations.

As the human toll of climate change becomes more apparent, millions of people worldwide are being displaced due to rising temperatures, sea levels, and the frequency of extreme weather events. Non-profit organizations and governments have been working to raise awareness about environmental protection and address the specific challenges posed by global warming.

However, it is imperative that corporations also embrace this responsibility and contribute to safeguarding the environment. Companies can make a meaningful impact by reducing their carbon footprint through renewable energy adoption, investing in green practices, and advocating for environmental protection policies.

In this context, Team Computers, a prominent Indian IT company, is setting an example by integrating environmental protection and climate change into its corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiatives. Since its inception, Team Computers has considered environment protection and climate change as crucial components of its CSR interventions. The company has taken action through its forestry initiative, aimed at restoring green cover in nearby areas using native species and raising awareness about the effects of climate change on natural habitats, with active involvement from local communities.

Ranjan Chopra, an inspirational leader and visionary entrepreneur hailing from IIT Kanpur, is the driving force behind Team Computers. As the mastermind behind this homegrown Indian IT company, which has been operating for over 35 years, he has led its growth to a valuation of 500 million dollars.

Over the past five years, Team Computers has implemented groundbreaking pilot initiatives in rewilding and forestry in Uttarakhand. Their innovative and sustainable methods focus on promoting native species without using harmful chemicals, complemented by an effective forest management strategy to increase green cover.

Climate Change and Forestry

Notably, the Miyawaki Method of forestry, an urban technique that creates dense forests using native plants, has yielded remarkable results, such as generating 13 Lacs Liters of water from the same area. The company also promotes mixed techniques like agroforestry, integrating trees into agricultural systems, to protect natural habitats and restore biodiversity.

Collaborating closely with local panchayats, forest departments, and universities, Team Computers ensures the successful implementation of their forestry initiatives. Each year, the company sets a target to create at least two forests, thus helping protect natural habitats from the adverse impacts of climate change. Presently, they are planting 10,000 plants every month in challenging hilly terrains, with a commitment to reach approximately 1,00,000 plants monthly.

By engaging local communities and panchayats in participatory planning and implementation processes, Team Computers aims to identify areas where afforestation can have the greatest ecological and economic benefits for communities. The company also seeks to collaborate with like-minded organizations working at similar scales and speeds.

Recognizing the significance of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR), Team Computers believes that businesses should embrace this concept to benefit their stakeholders, including customers, employees, and the local community. Merely focusing on financial bottom lines is no longer sufficient; businesses must consider their societal and environmental contributions.

“CSR not only holds benefits from a business perspective but can also have a profound positive impact on society as a whole. In line with this belief, Team Computers encourages its employees to actively participate in CSR initiatives, acknowledging that collective efforts can bring about greater positive change than individual actions alone.”, Ranjan Chopra added.

“Moreover, I believe that everyone can make a difference in the world. Henceforth we encourage our employees to participate in Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiatives, as they help contribute to a larger cause. Collective efforts of individuals can have a much greater, more positive impact on society than individual efforts alone. We aim to reach out and disseminate our learnings about forestry initiatives across pan India, particularly in areas that have been affected by human activities or natural disasters such as deforestation or flooding. Our efforts are focused on restoring and protecting the nation’s green cover through planting trees in formerly barren patches and reestablishing forests.”, he added.
