BHUBANESWAR (India CSR): The 15th CSR Leadership Summit 2025, held on Thursday, January 23, 2025, from 2 PM to 8 PM at Hotel Excellency, Bhubaneswar, Odisha, brought together corporate leaders, policymakers, and development experts to discuss the future of corporate social responsibility (CSR) in India. The summit focused on the theme “Fostering CSR in Odisha: Showcasing Odisha’s Pioneering CSR Initiatives – Innovation, Inclusivity, and Impact.”
A key highlight of the event was the insightful address by Nrusingh Prasad Mohapatra, Chief General Manager (R), NABARD, who emphasized the importance of CSR in rural development, sustainable resource management, and inclusive economic growth. His thought-provoking speech underscored the urgent need for corporates to invest in local communities, support farmers, and promote sustainability to create a meaningful impact.

CSR as a Catalyst for Rural Empowerment
Mohapatra highlighted how CSR can serve as a powerful tool to uplift rural communities by bridging economic disparities, enhancing agricultural resilience, and fostering skill development. He stressed that corporate interventions should go beyond compliance and focus on long-term community development.
“A truly impactful CSR initiative is one that empowers rural populations through sustainable agricultural practices, education, and access to markets,” he noted.

Harnessing Data for Effective CSR Strategies
One of the key takeaways from Mohapatra’s address was the importance of data-driven decision-making in CSR. He pointed out that corporations must base their CSR strategies on real-time data, ensuring that their projects align with the actual needs of communities.
“CSR is not just about spending funds—it’s about investing in solutions that deliver measurable impact,” he said, advocating for the use of data analytics to track progress and optimize CSR initiatives.
Addressing the Impact of Natural Disasters in Odisha
Odisha has long been vulnerable to cyclones, floods, and other natural calamities, severely affecting the livelihoods of rural populations. Mohapatra called for a proactive CSR approach to help communities build resilience against disasters.
“We need corporate partnerships that focus on disaster risk reduction, climate-resilient agriculture, and sustainable water management,” he emphasized, highlighting that businesses can play a key role in mitigating risks through infrastructure development, emergency preparedness, and livelihood restoration programs.

Sustainable Resource Management & Economic Growth
Odisha and neighboring Chhattisgarh are rich in natural resources such as minerals and forests, yet these regions struggle with economic disparities and environmental challenges. Mohapatra urged corporations to adopt responsible mining and industrial practices that balance economic growth with community welfare and environmental sustainability.
He cited examples of CSR initiatives that promote afforestation, water conservation, and eco-friendly industrial operations, showcasing how businesses can integrate sustainability into their core operations.
Corporate Accountability in Social Responsibility
The summit also addressed the ethical dimension of CSR, urging corporations to move beyond statutory obligations and genuinely engage in transformative social change.
“CSR should not be just a compliance requirement—it should be a moral responsibility,” Mohapatra stated, calling for greater corporate accountability, transparency, and stakeholder engagement in CSR efforts.

Education & Skill Development: Key to Rural Progress
A major focus of the discussion was education and skill development as drivers of social change. Mohapatra stressed that CSR programs must prioritize education, particularly for rural youth and women, to create better employment opportunities and reduce economic inequalities.

He highlighted successful CSR-backed vocational training programs that have helped rural communities transition from traditional livelihoods to modern, sustainable careers.
Building Collaborative Partnerships for Inclusive Growth
A recurring theme throughout the summit was the need for collaborative efforts between corporates, government bodies, and civil society organizations.
“CSR is most effective when businesses, policymakers, and communities work together towards a shared vision,” Mohapatra emphasized. He encouraged corporations to build long-term partnerships that focus on holistic development, rather than short-term charity.
