Udaipur: India’s unparalleled producer of Zinc, Lead, and Silver, Hindustan Zinc, proudly announced its latest accolade. The Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) has stamped its approval on the company’s pioneering near-term and net-zero environmental goals. This nod from SBTi positions Hindustan Zinc as a trailblazer, being the only Indian entity in the Mining sector – spanning Iron, Aluminum, and Other Metals – that can boast of such aligned environmental targets, especially in the context of the crucial 1.5°C global warming threshold.

Clear, Committed Targets

Hindustan Zinc’s environmental vision is both ambitious and clear-cut. They’ve pledged to cut their absolute scope 1 and 2 GHG emissions by half and further trim down their absolute scope 3 GHG emissions by 25% by the fiscal year 2030, all benchmarked against the FY2020 data. Their long-term sights are set on achieving a net-zero carbon footprint across all operations by 2050. What’s notable is that these aims are not just arbitrary numbers – they’ve earned the SBTi’s seal of approval, affirming their alignment with the stringent 1.5°C global warming trajectory. It’s noteworthy that the SBTi is a collaborative venture between several global organizations, like the CDP, UNGC, WRI, WWF, and the We Mean Business Coalition. Their collective objective is to champion science-driven corporate strategies to cut down on greenhouse gas emissions globally.

CEO’s Take on the Achievement

Arun Misra, the dynamic CEO of Hindustan Zinc, commented on this momentous accomplishment, stating, “This validation from SBTi isn’t just an award; it’s a testament to our unwavering commitment to counteract climate change. At Hindustan Zinc, we recognize the importance of harmonizing our carbon reduction aspirations with solid, science-backed benchmarks. It’s both our duty and a vivid display of our unwavering dedication towards sculpting a sustainable future for everyone. Our quest for positive environmental transformation is steadfast. We’re perpetually evaluating our strategic direction to ensure it fosters environmental health and general well-being.”

Beyond Validation

But it’s not just about getting a stamp of approval. Hindustan Zinc’s earnestness towards environmental stewardship is evident in their actions. They’ve inked a power purchase agreement for 450 MW RE-RTC and have transitioned to 100% green energy for operations at their Pantnagar Metal Plant. This steadfast commitment to walking the talk makes Hindustan Zinc not just an industry leader, but also an inspiration for sustainable enterprise globally.
