MUMBAI (India CSR): In line with Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport’s (CSMIA) commitment towards sustainability, the airport has implemented an array of innovative initiatives. CSMIA proudly announces the implementation of a cutting-edge feature in its infrastructure – a remarkable Vertical Green Wall at the airport. The initiative aims at reducing carbon footprint while constantly elevating the passenger experience.
This endeavour encompasses approx. 1,000 square meters of lush green walls, seamlessly integrated throughout the Terminal 1, Terminal 2, General Aviation Terminal, and the ceremonial lounge at CSMIA. These green walls not only enhance the aesthetic appeal of the airport but also contribute to environmental conservation.
Key features of the vertical greenery project include:
- Integrated Sustainability: Each green wall is equipped with an inbuilt drainage and drip irrigation system, ensuring efficient water usage that saves over 50% compared to conventional watering methods.
- Innovative Design: The green walls feature over 30 plant varieties, totalling more than 35,000 plants, with the growing media composed of coconut industry waste and neem-based manure. This sustainable approach to horticulture fosters healthy plant growth. Greenwall pots are designed to be easily replaceable, allowing for flexible design changes. The integration of wheels allows for easy movement of the green walls, while the design enables them to be dismantled and installed in a few minutes.
- Enhanced Passenger Experience: The green walls not only provide a visually captivating experience but also contribute to air quality improvement and overall well-being of passengers. Various patterns, shapes, and festive plants display throughout the year adding an element of delight to the traveller’s journey.
CSMIA has entirely transitioned to green energy sources, becoming one of India’s first 100% sustainable airports. Furthermore, CSMIA’s commitment to sustainability extends beyond its green initiatives. The airport has achieved the highest-level 4+ “Transition” accreditation in the Airport Carbon Accreditation (ACA) program by the Airport Council International (ACI). Some key initiatives include, installation of a unique Vertical Axis Wind Turbine & Solar PV system, the launch of Uber Green, an electric vehicle (EV) product, in partnership with Uber, making CSMIA the inaugural location in Mumbai to offer this eco-friendly transportation option.
Moreover, the airport’s commitment to waste management is evident through initiatives such as recycling 8,890 used plastic bottles through Reverse Vending Machines (RVMs) and achieving an impressive 42% water recycling rate in the fiscal year 2023-2024. CSMIA’s dedication to sustainability not only reinforces its position as a premier aviation hub but also adds to its beautiful infrastructure, showcasing a synergy between technology, innovation, and environmental consciousness.
