Bindeshwar Pathak was the founder of Sulabh International, a non-profit organization that has been working to promote sanitation and hygiene in India for over 50 years.

Bindeshwar Pathak, the pioneer of sanitation in India, passed away on Tuesday following a cardiac arrest. He was 80.

Introduction and Legacy of Bindeshwar Pathak

Sulabh International is an India-based social service organization that works to promote human rights, environmental sanitation, non-conventional sources of energy, waste management and social reforms through education. The organization was founded by Bindeshwar Pathak, a social activist and visionary who campaigned extensively to alleviate the plight of manual scavengers, the people who clean human excreta from dry latrines. Pathak died at a Delhi hospital due to cardiac arrest on August 15, 2023. He was 80 years old.

Dr. Pathak’s death is a great loss to India.

The Invention of the Sulabh Toilet

He is credited with developing the Sulabh toilet, a low-cost, waterless toilet that has been used by millions of people in India.

Innovation in Sanitation: The Sulabh Toilet

One of the major achievements of Sulabh is the construction of nearly 1.3 million household toilets and 54 million government toilets based on an innovative design. The Sulabh toilet is a low-cost, two-pit pour-flush toilet that does not require manual scavenging and converts human waste into biogas and fertilizer. The toilet is easy to maintain, hygienic and eco-friendly. It has been recognized by the United Nations as a global best practice in urban sanitation.

Advocacy for Manual Scavengers

Pathak was also a strong advocate for the rights of manual scavengers, who are people who are forced to clean human waste in public toilets. He founded the Sulabh Shauchalaya Nigam Limited, a company that provides employment to manual scavengers and trains them in other skills.

Bindeshwar Pathak was a true visionary and a tireless advocate for the poor and marginalized.

Lasting Impact and Legacy

Pathak’s work has had a profound impact on the lives of millions of people in India. He has helped to improve sanitation and hygiene in the country, and he has raised awareness of the plight of manual scavengers. He is a true pioneer and a national hero.

Efforts to Eradicate Manual Scavenging and Promote Dignity

Apart from building toilets, Sulabh has also led a movement to discourage manual scavenging and restore dignity to the people who were forced to do this demeaning work. Sulabh has liberated thousands of manual scavengers from their inhuman occupation and provided them with alternative livelihoods, education and social empowerment. Sulabh has also established a museum of toilets, a museum of water education, a public school and various training centers for the poor and marginalized sections of society.

Bindeshwar Pathak’s work will continue to inspire generations to come.

Recognition and Contribution to Clean India Campaign

Sulabh International is the largest nonprofit organization in India and has received many national and international awards for its outstanding work. It has also collaborated with various agencies and institutions around the world to spread its message of sanitation and social justice. Sulabh has made a significant contribution to the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan (Clean India Campaign), a flagship program of the Government of India that aims to end open defecation and improve sanitation facilities across the country by 2024.

Here are some of Pathak’s accomplishments:

  • Founded Sulabh International in 1970
  • Developed the Sulabh toilet, a low-cost, waterless toilet
  • Promoted sanitation and hygiene in India
  • Advocated for the rights of manual scavengers
  • Founded the Sulabh Shauchalaya Nigam Limited
  • Received the Padma Bhushan in 1991
  • Received the Ramon Magsaysay Award in 1997

Bindeshwar Pathak was a true leader who dedicated his life to serving humanity and making the world a better place. He will be remembered as a pioneer of sanitation and a champion of social justice. May his soul rest in peace.
