Balconagar: Bharat Aluminium Company (BALCO), India’s iconic aluminium producer, conducted various programmes during the 51st National Safety Week to increase awareness levels on safety among its workforce. Based on this year’s theme of – ‘Nurture Young Minds, Develop Safety Culture – BALCO’s employees organised safety rally in the plant to spread awareness regarding cardinal rules of safety and road safety measures. ‘Safetython – Arun for safety’ was also conducted, which witnessed enthusiastic participation by members of the BALCO family. The events were kicked off by Abhijit Pati, CEO and Director – BALCO in presence of senior management members, BALCO employees and business partners.
Speaking on the importance of safety, Abhijit Pati, CEO and Director, BALCO, said, “BALCO is striving to create the safest workplace in line with its philosophy of ‘Zero Harm’, through empowerment of each employee to stop any unsafe activity at site. Each member of the BALCO family is committed to contribute towards enhancing safety at workplace by adhering to cardinal rules of Industrial Heath, Safety and Environment. I am certain that our combined efforts will result in nurturing a safety-first culture.”
Reiterating their commitments, Balkishan Dhyanpelly, Quality Manager, NGSL & Rahul Dave, Site Incharge, LIPL, said, “Our emloyees are registering huge participation in the various safety awareness programmes conducted by BALCO. We are committed to work shoulder to shoulder in the direction of making BALCO the safest workplace.”
A participant of Safetython Simran Kaur, secretary, BALCO Ladies Club, said, “The safety programmes conducted by BALCO are playing a huge role in disseminating awareness regarding the same. Safety is of prime importance for every individual and we all are committed to take the safety management endeavors of BALCO to newer heights.”
In order to ensure best in class safety standards, the company has partnered with DuPont Sustainability Solutions to implement their safety management solutions at site. It is also carrying out several activities like waste reduction, carbon footprint reducation, water conservation, etc. in line with its mission of “Zero Harm, Zero Waste, Zero Discharge”. BALCO has also undertaken strong measures to dispose off 5 tonnes of e-waste through authorized recyclers and has also implemented Electrical Safety Governance Certificate OHSMS 45001. Apart from this, the company is working towards enhancing community health through its mobile health van initiative in partnership with Help Age India and by organizing regular health camps in the vicinity areas.
Taking long strides towards ESG goals, BALCO’s specific power consumption is lowest in India’s aluminium industry. At over 2.8 million certificates, BALCO is India’s largest REC buyer. The company is supplying fly-ash to cement manufacturers to aid in production of low-carbon cement and ensure 100% fly-ash utilization in circular economy avenues. BALCO also signed an MoU with VNIT Nagpur for using their green concrete solution for road construction inside the plant, as well as nearby areas. Apart from this BALCO has set industry benchmarks by topping the Perform, Achieve and Trade (PAT) Cycle-II among the Indian Aluminium Industry. Testimony to this, BALCO has received various awards in the field of Health, Safety and Environment such as Kalinga Environment Award 2020, International Green Apple Environment Award 2021, Golden Peacock Sustainability Award etc.
