NEW DELHI (India CSR): Alstom, a global leader in smart and sustainable mobility solutions, has won a €144 million (approximately Rs 1,285 crore) contract to supply traction components and maintenance services for 17 Vande Bharat Sleeper trainsets. This collaboration underscores Alstom’s ongoing commitment to supporting India’s ambitious rail modernization projects, aligned with the Make-in-India and Atmanirbhar Bharat initiatives.

High-Quality Components for Modern Sleeper Trains

The contract includes the supply of Mitrac traction components and other advanced electrical systems for 408 sleeper cars, designed to operate at a maximum speed of 180 km/h with a service speed of 160 km/h. These components will be manufactured at Alstom’s state-of-the-art facility in Maneja, Gujarat, known for its expertise in rail engineering and production.

The traction systems will be delivered to the Indian Railways’ Integral Coach Factory (ICF) in Chennai, with prototype production beginning in August 2026. Serial production is set to commence in 2027, and the maintenance services will follow in 2029, ensuring optimal performance and reliability for the fleet.

Commitment to Make-in-India and Atmanirbhar Bharat

Alstom’s local presence plays a pivotal role in advancing India’s vision of self-reliance. With manufacturing and engineering hubs in Savli, Coimbatore, and Maneja, the company is deeply invested in creating world-class products locally. These facilities not only fulfill domestic requirements but also contribute to export projects, reinforcing India’s position as a global manufacturing hub for rail components.

Maintenance Services for Long-Term Reliability

The contract also covers preventive and corrective maintenance of traction and electrical equipment for a period of five years, starting after the warranty phase. Alstom will provide 24/7 support through its extensive network of repair and overhaul centers, ensuring fleet safety, reliability, and performance.

Speaking about the partnership, Olivier Loison, Managing Director of Alstom India, stated:
“The Vande Bharat trains represent the future of rail-based mobility in India, and it is an honor to partner with Indian Railways in advancing their vision. With our strong manufacturing and engineering presence in India, we are poised to deliver world-class solutions while optimizing maintenance to ensure operational excellence.”

Driving Sustainability and Innovation in Rail

Alstom is renowned for its extensive portfolio of rail components and solutions, offering environmentally friendly and safe travel options. The company’s cutting-edge products include bogies, motors, traction converters, and green traction solutions. Alstom’s FlexCare Sustain service package ensures long-term safety and reliability through comprehensive repairs, overhauls, and obsolescence management.

A Global Leader Supporting Local Progress

Globally recognized for its leadership in rail services, Alstom’s contribution to the Vande Bharat Sleeper Trains reflects its alignment with India’s modernization initiatives. By delivering innovative rolling stock, rail equipment, and infrastructure, the company is enhancing the nation’s transportation landscape while fostering local job creation and technology development.

As Alstom strengthens its partnership with Indian Railways, this project symbolizes a step forward in the journey to a smarter, more sustainable rail ecosystem.
