The Intel® Teach Program and Master Trainer Club, Visakhapatnam, organized campus recruitment at the Institute of Advanced Studies in Education, Andhra University, to help solve the problem of unemployment.
Located in Visakhapatnam district, Andhra University is not just one of the oldest educational institutions in India, but also the first to be regarded as a residential and teaching-cum-affiliating university. The Institute of Advanced Studies in Education (IASE), a department of Andhra University, started functioning from the year 1998. The Institute offers pre-service and in-service training programs for secondary school teachers, including B Ed and M Ed courses.
Challenges
Student teachers who complete their B Ed or other courses from IASE are well equipped with knowledge, skills and attitudes to integrate technology in education. The major problem was unemployment. The student teachers were not getting employed after they completed their respective courses. A program to address these problems was needed in order to help the student teachers find the right jobs for themselves in reasonable time.
Solution
There was a lack of knowledge about the vacant teacher positions available in schools. Organised Campus Recruitment was carried out at IASE in collaboration with Intel® Teach Program and Master Trainer Club, Visakhapatnam. Driving the implementation process were: Prof Beela Satyanarayana, Vice Chancellor, Andhra University, Prof P V G D Prasada Reddy, Registrar, Andhra University, Prof K P Subba Rao, Dean – Faculty of Education, Andhra University, and Mr Prashant Kumar Panda, Secretary, Master Trainer Club, Visakhapatnam.
A follow-up plan was put in place to ensure that the program would be sustained for a long period by making it a part of Andhra University’s academic calendar.
Organised Campus Recruitment by the Intel® Teach Program and Master Trainer Club, Visakhapatnam
The Organised Campus Recruitment event was facilitated by the Intel Teach Program and Master Trainer Club, Visakhapatnam. Intel Teach is a professional development program that helps classroom teachers effectively integrate technology to enhance student learning. Intel Teach has been driving systemic changes in teaching and learning since 1999. So far, the Program has reached 1.4 million teachers in India, and trained seven million teachers in 50 countries.
The Master Trainer Club, Visakhapatnam, is a forum for teachers in the city who have been trained under Intel Teach to meet and exchange ideas for the successful integration of technology in curriculum.
Impact
The Organised Campus Recruitment program helped IASE, Andhra University, in a big way, and is an example that can be followed in other universities as well.
No More Unemployment Blues: Student teachers were able to attend as many interviews as they wanted to, under one roof. Hence, they had the opportunity to apply for all the possible vacancies that best suited them.
Bundle of Choices for Schools: The schools that participated in the program, in order to hire teachers, benefited by being able to choose the right candidates from a large number of well-qualified applicants for the vacant posts.
Thus, it was a win-win situation for the aspiring teaching graduates and the participating schools.
