BHUBANESWAR: As part of Clean India–Green India initiative, GMR Kamalanga Energy Limited (GKEL) supported the local youth with eco-friendly e-rickshaws to drive in Kamalanga & Mangalpur Panchayat roads of Dhenkanal district. The objective of providing e-rickshaws to local youth is to boost environment-friendly transport solutions in the remote area.
The e-rickshaws will play an important role in utilising energy for carrying passengers instead of the degrading practice of using physical human labour. The e-rickshaws to ferry school children and local people to shorter and medium distance and also provide eke out to the unemployed youths in the area. The major advantage of e-rickshaws is that it requires no fuel and it is operated using rechargeable batteries, thus having long life and less pollution.
GMR Varalakashmi Foundation, the CSR arm of GMR Group, provided financial support to the local youths for purchasing eco-friendly e-rickshaws under the Livelihood Restoration Project (LRP). Ramesh R Pai, Chief Operating Officer, GKEL handed over the e-rickshaw key to the local youth, on Wednesday.
“We are highly ecstatic on launching this innovative model of e-rickshaw.The initiative has further augmented our confidence to keep our surrounding green and make people happy. We have been working hard to uplift the living standard in the area by providing economic viability to the community,” Pai said.
GKEL is also using e-rickshaws inside the plant and its township area for transporting goods. The company has purchased four e-rickshaws for the uses in the plant, which was inaugurated by the Chief Operating Officer. “Our aim is to keep the plant and surrounding area pollution free. We will continue to embark on this mission,” he said.
GKEL launched a livelihood restoration pilot project to enhance income to the project-affected families through agri-based activity, employable skill training and micro-enterprises support initiative in Kamalanga & Mangalpur Panchayat of Dhenkanal district.
