PUNE : As part of its Corporate Responsibility, the Cummins Group in India, a leading manufacturer of engines, generator sets and related components and technologies, has pioneered several major initiatives to replenish the environment with water in cities where it has a manufacturing presence.
In Pune, under the Khadakwasla Lake Rejuvenation project, in partnership with the NGO, Green Thumb, Cummins has been engaged in the de-silting of the Khadakwasla lake, creating a recharge of close to 3,373 million gallons of water, till date.
Ahead of the World Environment Day on June 5, today, in the third phase of this project, close to 200 Cummins employees volunteered to plant an additional 5,000 trees at the banks of the lake.
Initiated by Green Thumb three years ago in 2012, Cummins entered the project soon after, with the intent to scale it up with its technical expertise and employee participation, in activities involving de-silting, plantation and maintenance of trees.
In the first two phases, following de-silting of a 1.5 km-stretch, the soil unearthed from the bottom of the lake was recycled to create a green belt surrounding the periphery of the dam. This belt has now become a habitat for various species of birds and butterflies as well as a pleasant walk-way for nature lovers. Hume pipes were installed and the two exiting culverts were cleaned for collecting the surface run-off water.
Khadakwasla Lake Rejuvenation project, aims to achieve :
(1) De-silting another 1 km, pitching of soil, tree plantation and maintenance
( 2) Creating awareness about water conservation in educational institutes & residential societies
Collectively, across all three phases, 9,000 trees have been planted, with more than 1000 Cummins employees spending over 4,200 hours towards the many activities of the project. In order to further scale up de-silting across the full 22 kms stretch of the lake, corporates like Tata Motors and Praj Industries have also joined hands with Cummins and Green Thumb.
Speaking at the occasion, S. Since 2012, we have engaged in multiple projects successfully involving our employees in all activities along with the support of our NGO partners”
This project is a part of the Water Neutrality drive that Cummins undertakes as part its Corporate Responsibility. The drive involves reducing water usage at all of its manufacturing facilities in Pune, Phaltan, Jamshedpur, Ahmednagar, Dewas and Pithampur, while also investing in projects that make water available to the communities.
