DHANBAD: Over the years unemployment is a major social challenge particularly among educated rural youth in the areas surrounding ACC, Sindri Cement Works site, especially in the surrounding habitations of Chhatatand Panchayat of Baliapur Block, Dhanbad district, Jharkhand.
Due to poverty and lack of awareness they could not able to access higher /professional education. Very few families have agricultural land and that too due to poor irrigation facilities they could not able to cultivate properly. The main sources of income are wages earnings, animal husbandry, very few are in government services. Illegal coal mining activities also attracts rural youth of these areas.
As part of the CSR initiatives of the ACC Cement, Sindri Cement works in the area of alternate livelihood options for educated rural youth Project “Eklavaya” – Eight months customized competitive coaching classes initiated for the rural students of ITI. We partnered with Resnick Coaching Classes located at Sindri with experienced teachers from Career point, a leading competitive exam coaching Institute of Jharkhand.
This time-bound coaching course is planned in a batch of 30 ITI rural students from village Chhatatand, Simatand, Shyamlapur to provide regular classes for various government competitive coaching classes. Students identified are from the community around plant periphery, who are unable to afford such courses in private coaching institutions due to financial crises as well as inadequate physical and social infrastructure.
This initiative is towards helping rural students of ITI to increase their competitive capabilities and opportunities to attain sustainable livelihoods. First batch of Eklavaya -I started in Dec. 2013 with 30 students and recently 2nd batch of Eklavaya -II of 30 students started in Nov. 2014.
The initiative resulted in a remarkable changes, ten students of first batch completed written exam of railway loco pilot exam and similarly two students have completed written exam of Northern Coal Field Ltd.
