JAMSHEDPUR: Tata Steel Mines, and it’s Collieries at Jamadoba and Digwadih have been conferred the National Safety Awards by the Ministry of Labour & Employment at a function held at Delhi on 20th March, 2015. The awards were presented by President of India Pranab Mukherjee.
Digwadih colliery of Tata Steel bagged the winner’s prize for mines safety among the Group ‘A’ collieries producing more than 90,000 tons of coal per annum for the contesting year 2011 and it was also selected as winner in the category ‘Lowest Injury Frequency Rate’ for contesting year 2012 while Jamadoba Colliery bagged the Runner’s up prize in the category ‘Longest Accident Free Period’ for the contesting year 2011.
On behalf of Jamadoba Colliery the award was received by Pinaki Saha, Head, Jamadoba Colliery, Tata Steel and Sitaram Singh, Overman. On behalf of Digwadih Colliery, the award was received by Sanjeev Kumar Thakur, Head, Digwadih Colliery and Rajesh Kumar Choubey, Overman, for the year 2011 while Vikash Kumar, Senior Manager, Operations and S.K Khawas, Senior Overman received it for the year 2012.
On this occasion Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) Labour and Employment, Government of India, Bandaru Dattatreya, Shankar Aggarwal, Secretary (MOL&E) and Director General of Mines Safety Rahul Guha were also present.
According to Rajeev Singhal, Vice President, Raw Materials, Tata Steel said “Receiving the National Safety Awards for our mines is a matter of great pride. Safety and security are of prime importance in our Mining operations. Awards such as these motivate us to reinforce our commitment to pursue excellence in safety at all our mining locations”
Tata Steel has undertaken various safety initiatives at its mines and collieries. The prime focus of the Company has been to introduce innovating engineering solutions and to start massive safety campaigns for transforming the people’s consciousness towards safety.
Some of the initiatives undertaken are Real Time Gas Monitoring for improving Gas Safety, Injection of Nitrogen Gas to overcome fire hazards, improved strata support and monitoring to improve roof fall, Introduction of fool proof when working on energy systems.
Ministry of Labour & Employment, Government of India instituted National Safety Awards (Mines) in 1983 with a view to promote a competitive spirit amongst mine operators for the betterment of safety standards in mines and to give due recognition to outstanding safety performance at national level.
