Tata Steel’s journey over the past century has been a fascinating saga of pioneering initiatives and its contribution to the society. Tata Steel, through Tata Steel Rural Development Society (TSRDS) has been a change agent in its areas of operations across health, education, sports and employability, thus improving the socio-economic status of the society and empowering the SC/ST communities.
Tata Steel has trained nearly 2000 youths in various vocational trades across locations in financial year 2013-14.Out of this, nearly 27% are from SC/ST communities. Nearly 600 youths were gainfully employed. Out of the youths employed, 18 % are from SC/ST communities. These include skills in trades like ITI, site safety supervisor, nursing, community health provider, construction, automobiles, motor driving, cosmetology, plastic technology, apparel design etc.
TSRDS, through the SHGs has adopted the Small Savings and Micro Enterprise route in the areas of operations to supplement family income. Over 750 SHGs and 9000-plus strong members have been supported in which 4000 members belong to SC/ST group. Tata Steel also has a policy on positive discrimination in favour of vendor organizations that have 50% or more SC/ST ownership or 75% or more work-force comprising SC/ST In the backdrop of the above, we write to you to explore an opportunity for a story on skill & enterprise development by Tata Steel in SC/ST communities.
