Why We Built Oren in a Market That Already Has Too Many Wearables

The first question investors ask when they hear about Oren is a fair one.

The wearables market is crowded. There are smart rings from Finland, smart bands from South Korea, fitness trackers from every direction. There are established brands with hundreds of millions in funding, global distribution and years of product development behind them. The question almost writes itself: why build another one?

The honest answer is that we are not trying to build just another wearable. We are building something the market has consistently overlooked: a health wearable designed around people, not just performance.

That means treating wellbeing as something shared, not managed alone. It means turning complex health data into simple, actionable guidance instead of endless charts. It means designing technology that reassures instead of overwhelms. And it means remembering that behind every data point is a real person, and often, a family that cares about them.

Those ideas shape every decision we’ve made at Oren.

The Problem We Kept Seeing

Spend time with today’s wearables and a pattern emerges quickly. Most are designed around a single user, looking at their own data, trying to improve their personal performance. Sleep scores. VO₂ max. Recovery percentages. Detailed breakdowns of REM cycles and cardiovascular load. The technology is impressive and the insights are genuinely useful.

But somewhere in the pursuit of personal optimisation, the industry overlooked something fundamental, not just about how people experience health, but about how they experience healthcare technology.

More data isn’t always more helpful. More metrics don’t always create more confidence. Sometimes they create confusion, anxiety and the feeling that you’re expected to interpret your own health without context.

We believed a wearable should do more than collect information. It should help people understand it, act on it and, when needed, share it with the people who matter most.

Health is rarely personal alone. We live in families, relationships and communities, and often, the greatest health anxiety we carry isn’t about ourselves. It’s about someone else. That feels especially true in India. We are a culture of caregivers, where families that once lived under one roof are now spread across states and time zones. The instinct to care for one another hasn’t changed, only the distance has.

Very few wearables were built with this reality in mind.

We didn’t want to build a device that simply measured your health. We wanted to build one that could guide it. One that combines intelligent technology with human understanding, turning health information into insights people can actually use, and making those insights meaningful not just for the wearer, but for the people who care about them.

What We Built Instead

Oren Mate is a smart ring. It tracks the health metrics that matter: sleep stages, heart rate, HRV, SpO₂, body temperature, stress and recovery. It does this continuously and comfortably from a lightweight 2.2 mm titanium ring that most people soon forget they’re wearing.

But what truly defines Oren isn’t the tracking itself. It’s what happens after the data is collected.

We built Family Health Circle into the heart of the product. Not as an add-on or as a premium feature but as the central idea.

You choose who is part of your circle and you decide what they can see. And the people who care about you gain quiet reassurance that you’re doing okay, without needing to call several times a day just to check in.

We also built SOS alerts that can instantly notify your trusted circle if something goes wrong. It wasn’t a feature we added because it was technically possible. It was a feature we added because we kept asking ourselves what this product should do for a daughter in London with ageing parents in Jaipur. The answer was clear.

We call this philosophy Connected Reassurance. Because health isn’t just better when it’s measured, it’s better when it’s shared.

The Decisions That Define the Brand

Three product decisions, in particular, reflect what Oren stands for.

No subscription. Ever.

Many health wearables require an ongoing monthly subscription to unlock the data your own device collects. You buy the hardware, then continue paying to fully access your health insights.

We didn’t believe that was the right experience. A subscription creates unnecessary barriers, especially for older users, families buying multiple devices or anyone who wants to take their health seriously without committing to another recurring expense.

Oren Mate is a one-time purchase and every feature, every insight is always included. It wasn’t the easiest commercial decision. It was the right one for the people we’re building for.

Human first. Always.

The health technology industry doesn’t have a shortage of data, it has a shortage of clarity. Dashboards filled with numbers, colour-coded warnings, scores that change without context and metrics that often leave people more anxious than informed.

Oren is designed to feel more like a knowledgeable companion than a medical instrument.

Our proprietary wellness score brings together everything the ring tracks: sleep quality, heart rate trends, HRV, recovery and activity into one simple, intuitive understanding of how your body is doing today.

Not another number to obsess over.

Just a clear signal that helps you understand how you’re feeling and whether anything needs your attention.

From the language we use to the way insights appear in the app, every interaction is designed to inform without overwhelming. We built Oren for people who want to understand their health, not decode it.

A platform, not just a product.

Oren Mate is our first device. It won’t be our last.

We’re building Oren as a health and wellness ecosystem for Indian families, one that grows as new devices are added, family circles expand and health insights become more meaningful over time.

The smart ring is the starting point. Family Health Circle is the connection. Together, they create a platform designed around care, continuity and shared wellbeing.

Every new device strengthens the experience for the entire family, something individual-first wearables were never designed to do.

Why This Market. Why Now.

India’s health technology market is at an important turning point.

Post-pandemic health awareness has permanently changed consumer behaviour. Smartphone adoption has reached the scale needed for connected health devices to become mainstream. India’s population above 60, now over 140 million people, continues to grow rapidly. At the same time, families are becoming more geographically distributed, making everyday caregiving harder than ever before.

Many global wearables entering India weren’t designed for this context. They assume individual users, higher subscription tolerance and different family dynamics.

Oren was built differently. We weren’t just adapted for India. Built here, from the ground up, with Indian families, Indian caregivers and the realities of everyday life at the centre of every decision.

What We Are Building Toward

The wearables market in India represents a significant opportunity, and we’re still in the early chapters of its evolution.

Our ambition is to build the health brand Indian families trust most. Not because it has the longest list of features or the most technical specifications, but because it understands what people actually need from a health wearable: simplicity, reassurance and technology that quietly fits into everyday life.

We’re not building just another smart ring. We’re building the health ecosystem for the Indian family. That’s why Oren exists. And that’s why the time is now.
