In rural communities, access to digital resources can mean the difference between opportunity and limitation. That’s where Project Umeed, a transformative initiative by S M Sehgal Foundation comes in. With generous support from partners like Guru Krupa Foundation, Teach for Life, supported by Trees for Life,India Development Relief Fund, and Sehgal Foundation(USA), this initiative is bringing a lasting impact and bridging digital skills to students in underserved communities providing students access to invaluable technological resources. The primary goal is to ensure equal opportunities for all, empowering rural youth with the digital and life skills necessary for academic success and future employment.

Digital Libraries with a Purpose

Project Umeed’s core lies in establishing digital libraries equipped with desktops, powered by solar energy. These libraries offer far more than just textbooks; they provide students with access to state board curriculum, motivational biographies, dictionaries, logical reasoning, materials on general knowledge and for competitive exam preparation. These resources are curated to meet the specific needs of students, providing them with a well-rounded educational experience.

Learning for the Future

The project also includes a comprehensive Digital and Life Skills Awareness course designed for students in grade 8 and above. Led by dedicated instructors at each digital library, this course covers crucial topics including:

  • Operating digital devices
  • Basic MS Office application
  • Using search engines to find information on exams, admission forms, job opportunities etc.
  • Responsible internet usage
  • Social and emotional skills
  • Health and sanitation awareness
  • Knowledge about government programs and services
  • These essential skills are designed to enhance the educational and employment prospects of students, preparing them for a future filled with opportunities.

What did the Students Say?

Amit Kumar, a 9th grader from Govt. Junior College, Malur, Karnataka, shares, “The digital library enabled us to search for information on required topics. The resources are valuable for assignments, projects, and research. The videos make the content engaging and interesting.”

Y. Pranay Kumar, a 9th-grade student from Zilla Parishad High School, Wadiaram, Telangana, adds, “We stay active while listening to the video lessons available in the digital library. Learning through this format makes the lessons lively. Plus the solar panels ensures we continue studying in the library without interruption. This kindness has made a difference in our lives. We promise to make the most of this valuable resource and continue striving for excellence.”

A Brighter Future Ahead

Equipping students with the necessary tools and knowledge, the project is laying the foundation for a brighter future.
