Unusual Facts About Books, Writers, Reading

Reading remains the most popular hobby in the world today. Reading reduces the risk of Alzheimer’s disease. At the same time, intellectual abilities increase due to the emergence of new neural connections. For comparison, when watching TV, everything happens exactly the opposite. If you do not have the opportunity to buy books or do not have time to visit the library, z-lib is an ideal option for reading lovers. A large selection of books, new world literature, and fast and safe downloads to any device will surely attract even the most demanding reader.

Billionaire bibliophile

Did you know that Bill Gates, the long-time director of Microsoft, is a bibliophile? He owns the most expensive book in the world—the Codex Leicester by Leonardo da Vinci. A big fan of the greatest inventor and creator, Gates purchased the original folio in 1994 for $30.8 million. This is the largest amount paid for an existing manuscript edition.

Interestingly, the Windows 98 design contains elements present on the splash screen of the scanned and digitized version of this work. It is now freely available.

Writer-prankster

The author of “The Good Soldier Schweik,” Jaroslav Hasek, was repeatedly arrested for vagrancy in his youth. This experience later helped him describe the conditions of prison cells in detail.

He was also a great fan of catchy headlines. For example, as editor-in-chief of the magazine “Animal World,” Hasek wrote articles about non-existent “newly discovered” species. This is how information about domestic werewolves, idiotosaurus, sixteen-winged flies, etc., appeared. Since the magazine was not fantastic, Jaroslav did not last long in it.

Read fast, or the book will disappear

Here are some more interesting facts about the book that disappears. Time restrictions are a well-known marketing technique. You won’t have another chance if you don’t read the book right away.

It all started with the art album “Agrippa (A Book of the Dead)”. It contained a floppy disk (the book was published in 1992) with a poem about the properties of human memory, which rememberings are doomed to gradual disappearance. When reading from the floppy disk, a program was activated that encrypted the text. The album illustrations were printed with ink that disappeared under the influence of light.

The publishing house Eterna Cadencia (Argentina) repeated a similar trick when it released “The Book That Cannot Wait Long.” After the reader opened it, it took 2 months to read it. After 60 days, the ink disappeared.

The famous bibliokleptomaniac

The answers to all kinds of interesting questions about books are probably known to US citizen Stephen Bloomberg, the most famous biblio сleptomaniac. He managed to steal about 23,000 rare books and more than 11,000 ancient manuscripts from 268 libraries. Often, eccentric methods of theft were chosen, reminiscent of the plot of adventure films. The total value of the stolen valuables is more than $ 20 million.

Many library keepers, also in love with books, considered him a personal enemy. Having a whole set of mental illnesses, he fought against a fictional “government conspiracy” that limited access to valuable publications.

His book depository was luxurious. After Bloomberg was ratted out by an accomplice, he had to change this luxury to the more modest setting of a prison library.

Reading not only enriches the mind but also connects us to fascinating stories, from billionaire bibliophiles to disappearing books, proving that the world of literature is as unpredictable as it is captivating. For those eager to dive into this endless treasure trove, Zlibrary offers a gateway to explore countless tales without limits.
