PUNE: For over five consecutive years, Dow Corning, a global silicone leader, has been organizing a Fascinating Silicone™ Science Day for local school children at their manufacturing plant in Ranjangaon, Pune. This year as well, more than 40 students of the Shree Bhairavanath Madhyamik Ani Uchamadhyamik School at Karde village visited the Dow Corning plant, along with their teachers, to explore the fascinating world of silicones, and learn how silicones help improve the quality of our lives.
David Longo, Dow Corning’s manager for the Pune site said, “We want to use the Science Day to showcase the power of silicone chemistry and stimulate scientific curiosity among the children. After all, they are the teachers, scientists and inventors of the future!”
In addition to a tour of the manufacturing site and the laboratories, the Science Day program included experiments like foam control using silicones as well as fabric printing using liquid silicone rubber. Various product displays along with interesting facts on “Sand to Silicones” and “Solar applications” were arranged in the visit area. These displays and experiments enabled students to understand the unique properties and everyday applications of silicones in a simple way.
Students also participated in a solar car race, using solar-powered cars that they assembled themselves. Fun activities such as memory games were also conducted, with prizes for winners; and giveaways for all the students. The solar car race and the experiments were conducted on the school premises to enable a larger number of students to attend the event.
Mr. Longo added, “Events such as these enable us at Dow Corning to not only further the cause of children’s education but also ensure that we are nurturing the community relationships built over the years.”
