International Environment Education Day is a global observance that aims to raise awareness and promote action on environmental issues and sustainability. It is celebrated every year on January 26, since 1975, when the Belgrade Charter was adopted as a framework for environmental education by experts from over 70 countries. In this article, we will explore the definition, history, characteristics, role and impact of environmental education, and how it can help us address the current and future challenges of our planet.

Definition of Environmental Education

Environmental education can be defined as a process of learning and teaching that fosters the development of environmental awareness, knowledge, skills, attitudes, values, and behaviors among individuals and communities. It also encourages the participation and collaboration of various stakeholders in finding solutions to environmental problems and enhancing the quality of life for all. Environmental education is not only about acquiring information, but also about developing critical thinking, problem-solving, and decision-making skills that can lead to positive environmental actions.

History of Environmental Education

The concept of environmental education emerged in the 1960s and 1970s, as a response to the growing environmental crisis and the need for a more holistic and interdisciplinary approach to education. Some of the key events and milestones in the history of environmental education are:

  • In 1968, the Biosphere Conference in Paris, organized by UNESCO, recognized the importance of environmental education for the conservation and rational use of natural resources.
  • In 1972, the United Nations Conference on the Human Environment in Stockholm, Sweden, declared that environmental education is essential for creating a more harmonious relationship between humans and nature.
  • In 1975, the International Workshop on Environmental Education in Belgrade, Yugoslavia, adopted the Belgrade Charter, which defined the goals and principles of environmental education within the framework of United Nations programs.
  • In 1977, the Intergovernmental Conference on Environmental Education in Tbilisi, Georgia, endorsed the Belgrade Charter and proposed a set of recommendations and guidelines for the implementation of environmental education at all levels and in all sectors of society.
  • In 1987, the World Commission on Environment and Development published the Brundtland Report, which introduced the concept of sustainable development and emphasized the role of environmental education in achieving it.
  • In 1992, the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, adopted the Agenda 21, which included a chapter on promoting education, public awareness, and training for sustainable development.
  • In 2002, the United Nations declared the Decade of Education for Sustainable Development (2005-2014), which aimed to integrate the principles and practices of sustainable development into all aspects of education and learning.
  • In 2015, the United Nations adopted the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, which included 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and 169 targets, many of which are related to environmental education and awareness.

Characteristics of Environmental Education

Environmental education has some distinctive characteristics that make it different from other forms of education. Some of these characteristics are:

  • It is interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary, meaning that it draws on and integrates knowledge from various disciplines and fields of study, such as natural sciences, social sciences, humanities, arts, and ethics.
  • It is learner-centered and participatory, meaning that it respects and responds to the needs, interests, and experiences of the learners, and involves them actively in the learning process and in the decision-making and action-taking on environmental issues.
  • It is context-specific and locally relevant, meaning that it takes into account the environmental, social, cultural, and economic realities of the learners and their communities, and adapts the content and methods of education accordingly.
  • It is action-oriented and transformative, meaning that it aims to empower the learners to take informed and responsible actions to improve the environment and their well-being, and to foster positive changes in themselves, their communities, and the society at large.

Role and Impact of Environmental Education

Environmental education plays a vital role in addressing the environmental challenges and opportunities that we face in the 21st century. Some of the benefits and impacts of environmental education are:

  • It increases environmental awareness and literacy, which are essential for understanding the causes and consequences of environmental problems, and for developing informed opinions and attitudes towards them.
  • It enhances environmental skills and competencies, which are necessary for identifying, analyzing, and solving environmental problems, and for implementing and evaluating environmental actions and policies.
  • It fosters environmental values and ethics, which are the basis for developing a sense of responsibility and care for the environment and for all living beings, and for respecting the diversity and interdependence of life on Earth.
  • It promotes environmental behavior and citizenship, which are the expressions of taking personal and collective actions to protect and improve the environment, and to participate in the democratic processes and institutions that influence environmental issues.
  • It contributes to environmental quality and sustainability, which are the outcomes of achieving a balance between the environmental, social, and economic dimensions of development, and of ensuring the well-being of present and future generations.

Environmental education is a key tool for enhancing our environmental awareness, knowledge, skills, values, and behaviors, and for empowering us to take action for a more sustainable and equitable future. By engaging in environmental education, we can learn more about our environment, ourselves, and our society, and we can make a positive difference for our planet and its inhabitants..
