London-based Hagman Global Strategies comprehensive market study on virtual production (VP) has identified Russia as a major force in the rapidly evolving virtual production landscape, with Moscow-based XOVP (eXtraOrdinary Virtual Production) at Moskino establishing itself as the world’s leading studio by project volume.

The study positions Russia as a “highly concentrated market with a single dominant hub” that is redefining industry benchmarks for production throughput. The research, which analyzed the global distribution of virtual production studios and their output in 2025, reveals that Russia commands 6% of the worldwide virtual production market with three operational studios.

While the United States leads in overall market share (45%) and the United Kingdom dominates in high-end film and TV integration (29%), Russia has carved out a unique leadership position in project execution volume. “The Russian virtual production market represents a fascinating case of concentrated excellence,” the study notes. “With XOVP at Moskino producing more than 50 films, series, advertisements, and music videos, Russia has demonstrated that a focused, high-throughput model can compete effectively with geographically distributed markets.”

XOVP at Moskino: Unprecedented Production Volume XOVP’s achievements documented in the study highlight Moscow’s emergence as a virtual production powerhouse:

  • Total Projects Completed: 50+ films, series, ads & music videos
  • Feature Films: 12 productions
  • TV Series: 19 productions
  • LED Volume: 1,000+ m² across 2 VP pavilions
  • Throughput Classification: Very High (Industry Leading)

These figures place XOVP ahead of renowned international competitors including ILM StageCraft (9 projects), Pixomondo (9 projects), and NantStudios (10 projects) in the combined film and series category.

World-Class Infrastructure at Moskino The study highlights XOVP’s substantial physical infrastructure, which enables its high-volume production model. The facility features two dedicated virtual production pavilions with over 1,000 square meters of LED volume, positioning it among the most capable studios globally in terms of production capacity.

“Russia leads in the number of completed projects,” the report states. “The Russian VP market is represented by one flagship studio and two smaller local studios. This means, compared to the US and UK, it’s a much more concentrated development model, with each studio producing over 60 films and shorts.”

Global Market Context The study positions Russia within a broader global landscape where virtual production has evolved from “disparate experiments” into “a system of regional hubs with varying specializations.” According to the research:

  • USA: 13 VP Studios (45% Global Market Share)
  • UK: 9 VP Studios (29% Global Market Share)
  • Continental Europe: 4 VP Studios (10% Global Market Share)
  • China: 3 VP Studios (6% Global Market Share)
  • Russia: 3 VP Studios (6% Global Market Share)
  • Asia (excl. China): 2 VP Studios (4% Global Market Share)

North America accounted for 40.55% of the global virtual production market in 2025, while Asia-Pacific remained the fastest-growing macro-region, reaching $772.3 million according to Grand View Research.

Three Distinct Leadership Models Emerge The study categorizes virtual production leaders into three distinct types, with XOVP featuring prominently in two categories:

  • Leaders in Films and TV Series (Cinematic Quality Layer): XOVP leads with 19 series and 12 films, surpassing ILM StageCraft (7 films, 2 series), Pixomondo (3 films, 6 series), and NantStudios (2 films, 8 series).
  • Leaders in Number of Projects (Industry Throughput Layer): XOVP’s 50+ projects places it alongside Garden Studios (UK) and Quite Brilliant (UK) as the industry’s primary throughput engines.
  • Infrastructure Leaders (Stage Infrastructure Layer): While China (Versatile/Absen Deqing at 1,700 m²) and Europe (EFD Madrid at 2,000+ m²) lead in physical scale, XOVP’s 1,000+ m² positions Russia competitively in infrastructure capacity.

About the Study The World Virtual Production Market Volume study was conducted to determine interchange points between technologies, equipment, software, and experienced employees; analyze the global virtual production market by the number of ongoing projects in cinema, TV series, and short-form content; and identify market leaders based on the nature of projects implemented in virtual production environments.

The complete study provides detailed analysis of 31 major virtual production studios across six global regions, offering insights into market specialization patterns and emerging industry trends.
